Cloudflare slows down my website
I'm running a silly little expressjs server on a laptop in South Africa
The website has about 3ms response time from my computer 5 feet away from laptop normally, but when I proxy through cloudflare then I suddenly get 500ms to 900ms delay. From what I can tell it also routes my website through London instead of a server in South Africa, but even then 500-900 ms delay seems unreasonable
Anyone have any clue what's causing this?

Take a look here to see why the Cloudflare datacenter you are routed towards isn't always the closest geographically: https://www.cloudflare.com/en-gb/learning/cdn/glossary/anycast-network/
It is like handing over general theory of relativity book to someone who asked what is gravity
I figured as much, think argo smart routing might help my case?
that's rather mean dang
thanks very much for the help, Leo!
I just had my canadian friend test it for me
with cloudflare proxy he gets 750ms+ delay
but with cloudflare disabled, he gets 300ms delay
I can't imagine that this is normal
perhaps I have my cloudflare misconfigured?
I did some research, seems this is just a side effect of being a free users instead of a paid one
Try the test on https://cloudflare.manfredi.io/en/tools/datacenters/
Cloudflare Tools
Cloudflare Tools
A set of unofficial tools to check connectivity to the Cloudflare network.
If you consistently get far away datacenters on lower plan levels and closer ones on higher plan levels then yes thats what happening
If its always bad across plan levels then thats your ISP routing
Thanks for your reply 🙂
Haven't tested on any higher plan than free plan yet
although, using this: https://cloudflare.manfredi.io/en/tools/connection/
I consistently get the server closest to me
Use page rules mate and you'll get insane speed
Hey Erisa, is there any cache HIT loading speed difference between free and enterprise or any paid plan.
I believe there is increased speed for cache serving in enterprise/paid plans.
