How to dress appropriately as a dad living in a tropical climate?
I've never known how to dress well. I can do the business casual, but I want to figure out how to dress well outside of work. T-shirt and old navy jogger shorts aren't it. I started looking into dressing better but a lot of things I've seen so far look very warm (layered) and ill-suited to a tropical climate (pretty much year round). Help me MFA, you're my only hope.

I don't care what anyone says, I'll forgo any type of layering in a humid climate. Doesn't matter if it's seersucker, linen etc the additional layer just makes me sweat more
Are there any tips on how to wear comfortable t-shirts / shorts but still remain stylish? (besides looking physically good to begin with, lol)
Camp collar linen shirts?
Linen, linen, linen
Slubby linen or cotton/linen trousers, cut wide for airflow?
as mentioned earlier yeah i have giant thighs
And I agree don't bother layering. Leave that to MFA posers in the frozen north, and J Crew catalogs

Open collar design keeps you feeling cooler. A versatile basic.
whoa, $6!
I've seen Black Ficus recommended for linen pants
eBay
Polo Ralph Lauren 100% Linen Ivory Self Windowpane Check Slubby Sum...
Maker Polo. Material Linen. Condition Pre Owned. Width of hem opening 8.5. Material underneath hem 1.5.
oops, out of stock
linen: cool
ivory: reflects sunlight
wide cut and flowy: breezes through
yeah the link I linked is just an example
problem with year round tropical climate: stores still follow seasons
maybe I have to go thrifting.
good thing you got the internets
Yeah, keeping an eBay search saved for Ralph Lauren linen is a hot tip
Hey aren't we the same size jfarrell?
Competition!
uhoh!
38-40R, 34/30?
so Linen. how about shorts? whats a more elevated short, i dont wanna be cargo pants dad.
32-30 for my trousers, 36-38R for jacket :)
Yeah 100%, linen shorts are rad
Look for some nicer shorts, cut like chinos
Ok you're a bit smaller
Or on the flip side, slubby linen that feels summery. Dare I say maybe even undyed linen?
Very "beach."
I notice that younger guys are wearing really short shorts. even guys with massive thighs. is this a trend
Now whether "very beach" is a good thing is up to you to decide.
what would be age appropriate for a 40 year old
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Whatever you want
Short shorts are a trend. When I was a kid my mom bought me not-that-short shorts and kids mocked me all summer
But now short shorts are in!
If you want to wear 5" shorts and show off your muscular thighs, nobody here will stop you
lol thats the one I saw on amazon. Men's slim fit 5" chino
i dont think I could ever wear that
That's fine too
I don't think short shorts are my thing
thanks for indulging all my questions.
i think also color matters a lot
im asian (japanese) and have light skin. but its more of an olive tone. My wife has commented that certain colors don't go well with my skin tone
how can I find what pallette works for me?
I think MFA is generally not a believer in matching your skin tone.
Wear colors that you enjoy wearing.
thats a good take.
alright I think that gives me some ideas to play around with. i'll probably have to start a new thread for other things. 🙂
Good luck!
Posting a picture is the best way to get feedback, but I understand it takes courage.
ill get around to that eventually.
Some tailors have mtm shorts
i should also mention I'm on a budget.
those look expensive 😛
also i dont know what mtm means
have you tried looking at brands likie vuori? ive got a few pairs of shorts from them that are really lightweight and nice enough to wear out without looking too generic or like 'cargo pants dad' as you put it.
$60-80 😮
ah yeah they can be a little pricey. maybe check out some surf brands (rvca, quicksilver, hurley, etc). similar styles but much cheaper and made of lightweight fabrics
MTM = made to measure
Don't do MTM unless you need to or really want to. Red herring.
Seems really pointless for shorts, unless by "massive thighs" you mean "I am literally Hafþór Björnsson"
No just measured, 24”
the old navy jogger shorts are actually not necessarily bad
good lesson in color and materials imo. they had a linen-cotton pair in mint green last season that would have been perfect
they're also drawstring which is ideal for shorts because shorts are more casual
if you're going to layer in a tropical climate, a good idea would be ribbed tank top (can just get the ones from hanes for example) + camp collar shirt
Yeah I just wear them because they’re comfortable but my other problem is I wear them too much and they get faded and look worn out and sloppy
Since I like darker muted colors like black and gray
As a dad in south-central Texas, I am wearing a lot of guayaberas and camp shirts. The cut on both is pretty loose, so I get a lot of airing out. Next shirt purchase I'm considering is getting a seersucker shirt.
One bit of advice I also got was that if you want to dress up more for hot weather, a bit of jewelry is better because it adds something of interest without being something hot. I bought a simple black leather necklace off Etsy and put my (heavy Tungsten Carbide) engagement ring on it.
