Does a buttoned coat vent have any practical purpose?
I have a coat with a back vent that can be buttoned shut. The vent doesn’t go up very high even when unbuttoned.
I understand that vents can help with comfort when sitting, but I personally haven’t noticed any other practical effects of having or lacking a vent (like warmth, ventilation). Is the buttoned vent on a coat generally for providing the wearer with an aesthetic choice, or does it have a practical purpose that I’m just not appreciating? Maybe buttoning it adds a little more splash protection, however small?

I’ve never seen a vent button before that’s wild. Personally I’d probably just leave it open
do you have a pic you can share?
Never seen that before, that's neat. If you don't notice practical differences then probably just leave it open
I think it's for riding a horse or motorcycle, a lot of military greatcoats have button-down vents for that
If it doesn't go high enough to do that it could just be emulating that detail from military coats
I have one on an ulster coat. It makes sitting down easier while open and the coat is warmer/drapes better while buttoned
