Shopping advice/developing my style
Hi guys,
I’m looking to improve my fashion/style and looking for recommendations/tips. My usual outfit has been an gym or crew tee, sweats, and some running sneakers. I do have a couple Uniqlo supima tees in a couple colors (green, red, blue, black) that I used to wear when I was smaller but not much for bottoms other than sweats.
I work as a software engineer in NYC, in our office there isn’t really a dress code but I’d like to at least look decent (I'm also a bit on the younger side relative to my coworkers @ 27).
I’m 5’7, weight went from ~200 to 240. I’m working on getting back down but wanted to at least look a little better style-wise in the meantime. I can provide some pics/measurements if that helps.

Version 7 of the classic MFA post
With that, you will be better-dressed than all your coworkers. Unless you work with @mewball .
thanks, checking it out now. would slim fit instead of straight fit chinos/jeans work instead? for reference im about a 39x30 currently
also if it helps, i have a sister who can tailor some of my clothes or i can check out a tailor
MFA likes straight fit right now, not slim. But you should buy what you like that makes you happy.
fair, going shopping later so i can post some fit checks when i get back with both options
Based on your post it’d probably be wise not to spend an exuberant amount of money before you lose the weight you’re intending to. As it relates to slim pants it depends on your upper layering. If you’re planning on buying stuff in the tailoring department, slim pants will throw off your proportions
right now looking at getting some dark blue jeans, olive chinos, and one or two light sweaters and going from there
fair, i was thinking of going with some of the more budget options (target, uniqlo) then once i lose more weight dip my feet into other brands i like the look of
Makes perfect sense! Check out J Crew as well for Chinos
never shopped there but i know it's a mfa favorite so i can check it out!
any suggestions for shoes/sneakers? right now these 2 are pretty much all I wear
was thinking something all-white, just hate how dirty they can get
Adidas Stan Smith or Converse Chuck 70s
Tho they may not be the best for winter
should be ok, i have some boots i can wear if it ever snows
for the chucks i guessing low tops?
probably
not exactly all white but i like the look of these https://www.adidas.com/us/stan-smith-cs-shoes/ID2040.html
otherwise i also like these https://www.adidas.com/us/stan-smith-shoes/FX5500.html
The green/white Stan Smith colorway is the classic one
thoughts on this henley and chino from jcrew? pretty sure the bottoms should be sized up (they didn't have them in store so was going to order online)
It’s hard to tell since you aren’t wearing shoes but it looks like you might want to go a size smaller on the inseam. The pants are pooling around your ankles. That is a look in some aesthetics but I general I think you might want a shorter inseam.
Besides that I think it looks good. It’s a little basic but similar to looks I like to wear. It’s a good foundation to start with and then you can experiment with other things that will pair well with those items
ah yeah, they only had 32s and im a 29-30
That's okay, you can just cuff them. Getting pants hemmed is also one of the cheapest alterations, usually around $15 most places
You're right that you should size up in the chinos. They look a little tight around the thighs and there's pulling around the pocket. I think the henley is a good fit
