2023 Recap - Purchase - Topic of the day 12/13/23
What purchase you made this year was your favorite? Did you find a grail, unexpectedly come to love a piece, or something else?

I would not like to be reminded of the money I have spent this year on clothing, good try
The real grail is the friends we made along the way
Hmm
These pants, because they got me hooked on eBay.
Also my red Adidas.
I thought the real grail was big pants.
Standout things I bought this year are a EG flight jacket from 2021 and a Harago camp collar shirt from last season. Also the gramicci pants I bought one size up, filled a hole in my wardrobe and made dressing more exciting cause I wasn't always like, man I wish I had different pants
I spent more on clothes this year than any other year I think. Almost all of my feminine clothes 💕 highlights being the Junya skirt, Junya coat, Junya denim skirt, cdg set, heihei set, Vaquera sweatshirt + new rocks
All the pants I bought this year weren't that big unfortunately. I did buy the kapital boro jacket this year which probably was my most exciting purchase
so heat....
so heat...
woaah
wait do you also collect rocks?
u trollin buddy
new rocks are the boots!
oh...
Fuzz just wanted to talk about some minerals
2023 fashion wise has been disgustingly good to me and i'd say it's my first year where i finally started settling into my aesthetic as well as my sense of self. haven't worn sweatpants in months, got the pop of color i finally wanted along with other interesting bits on basic garments
2023 definetely a standout for sure. liked a lot of pieces from this year + a lot of things i had my eye on from previous years popped up on resale sites
going to ignore the financial irresponsibility parts
did sell a lot too, so telling myself it just evened out
do not ask me the total amount i spent on clothes this
I'd never
my shit stuck in depop rn lmao but it's like uniqlo stuff
so dime a dozen
I picked up some Century denim jeans used, they really fit my vibe.
i think my single tattoo last week is nearly as much as my clothes purchases this
That tracks
no regrets tbh
i did some napkin math and it is not
I won't even do that
So many pickups this year, I think I may go back and do a breakdown at some point
got my financial mistakes clearly tallied on spreadsheet
ong
yeah my budgeting app makes it too easy to see lol
but i also had 2 instances of insane Balling alone which uhhh
those periods alone i think i spent more than last 2 years combined
i was like stressing hard on black friday
bc i just kept putting shit into the cart
but now im like yeah i love this shit
A bit more than I thought. Amount spent was +2,600 MSRP value was +30,600 from where my closet was last new year
🍄 🍄 🍄
damn that's more than my entire wardrobe i just graduated
msrp value of +30k??? what
I feel like my purchases this year was just clearing out shit i accumilated since quarantine when i didnt know waht to do w/ myself
Assuming full price for everything I bought, and I only buy secondhand or deep/sample
I haven't bought anything for retail in like 3 years 😂
do you do it for insurance reasons or just because?
i assume most of us don't tbh
(buy for retail)
I started tracking it for insurance yeah
thats good, I need to do the same. I probably wear like 30% of what I own
i want like half my wardrobe gone rn lmao
which also makes me excited
bc i have literally so much room to explore
ahh yeah makes sense. i should do that too but so much stuff is hard to track the MSRP cost of cause of time. Cost-wise I feel like i'd be too overwhelmed by how much i spend
i have a borderline capsule wardrobe rn
ok not really but
i know what im gonna wear vs won't and it's like 25 items lmao
I did a closet cleanout like 3 months ago, posted everything on ebay/poshmark
idk how to make my shit sell on depop im just gonna go rock bottom prices
people on those sites won't buy anything if it costs more than $20
soem of it better to just take to buffalo or 2nds treet type shit
it's like 10-20
for uniqlo tier stuff
i figured buffalo pays less (i have not checked)
It's surprisingly easy to sell stuff on ebay
Like I posted 45 items with relatively high prices to account for the 15% charge
yeah I'm probably gonna donate a lot of my stuff and just sell a few items
about 25 of them sold in 2 weeks
best purchase: ts(s) nylon insulated v-neck sweater off of grailed. made me remember i really like ts(s), which informed several other poor financial decisions this year!
I don't even bother lowering prices
i shall try ebay
i looked at the UI and got intimdated 💀
Worst purchase: kestin stac jacket in combat wool. cool material, good construction, neat idea, wears like shit. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0258/6001/4152/t/26/assets/suitcharcoal-1666366342602.jpg?v=1666366344
I think this shirt is my fav purchase of 2023, but this year I sold pretty much my entire wardrobe and bought a new one so there are tons of pieces that I love. Unexpectedly coming to love a piece: my nb990v6 were pretty much impulse bought when I saw a pair in my size go up on TRR but they're so comfy that I want to wear them every day
I bought a lot of cool vintage stuff this year but my two favs are the og107 jumpsuit and the 60s french chore jacket
This was the first year in a while that I actually bought a good amount of clothing
So I’ll probably be chilling out on that for a while but I’ll wrap up my purchases in a sec
Some standouts for me are, discovered 4S this year, spent too much on them (more purchases planned). Also found a grail of mine used (Stussy Venus shirt). Also got a cool Wacko Maria shirt. Theres more but these shirts are the big ones in my head (I buy too much clothing)
The biggest get are probably these slacks and my marching band jacket, but the tee is also from this year
These are the same pants as these fits
And they’re just perfect
Did you make them yourself?
I feel like this year was a glow up for a good chunk of mfa
God ive had so many good cops this year. If i am picking one its my lemaire slippers. Then like brycelands denim westerner and my polo duffle coat
But ive had many more that im super stoked about
My standout has to be the monitaly b-15 that I bought it in January and pretty much live in during the colder months. Trying to get more wear out of it also led to a major style shift this year, so I think it's had the most impact out of anything I've bought.
I wish haha, though the ones I did make are really lovely too
I'm going through most of the stuff I've bought through tracking my posts in another server, and it seems I bought around 40 things that were towards my wardrobe or personal style in some way.
I think this means I should really slow it down next year, but I'm glad that the most expensive piece that I got this year was something that was truly meaningful to me. The definition of a grail item of mine where I saw it get sampled and get told "I'm probably not releasing something like this" to actually getting to see the finished product in-hand, on-body, and have it be from a local source. Truly exciting. Commonside jacket, I'll love you forever.
I'm posting it along with my biggest bust of the year, a blazer whose cut and material just really did not feel right on me. Sorry Janik!
Some other stats:
Thrifted/vintage: 14
Online second-hand: 10
In-clothing store pickups: 15 (on-sale: 7)
In-transit right now: 5
Hits: 28
Meh: 6
Bad: 2
I'm finding that the effects of me heavily wearing most of what I own are starting to show in how they age. The way the garments are pulling, pilling, fading, falling apart. It's an admittedly uncomfortable process for me and I'll need to start admitting to myself when things will be consider unwearable.
I hope to not compensate for that feeling by spending more and more on clothes, so I think I'll start tracking purchases in real-time through a spreadsheet. Fashion is part of what has made me become a fully-fledged man in our world, and part of that process is acknowledging how to approach it healthily. Balancing it amongst other financial, social, and learning priorities in your life. I hope to accomplish that for the following year.
Ok even if the jacket was a brick that fit pic slays
luv my new tops i feel like im switching personalities
I love that Beams Sweater so much
An absolute staple in my wardrobe
I love the guitar cat
Most of my wardrobe is from this year so dunno where to start... maybe the best buys are my leather boots:
- Ralph Lauren https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1135916565183856660/1150130788822691840
- Soviet Navy https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1135916565183856660/1168622641108754485
Both are eBay purchases so I was pretty nervous about the fit (the navy boots maybe are a tad big now that I've broken them in somewhat lol) but they've worked out well, they feel great, look great... And I've worn them to some fun get-togethers, and even spent an afternoon with friends and my dad doing leather care together <:blobhaj_boot:956042293255745546>
I think my $25 J. Crew suit might have just taken the lead. We'll see if it fits tho.
23 has been a very good goth year for sal. Picked up some major grails including an Ann Demeulemeester carlatti shirt and Rick Owens memphis denim.
Unexpected delights from the year include some orslow cargos and solomons that I live in all summer and two bits of heavy black linen that have quickly become favorites, an Ann D coat and By Walid wide cropped trousers
for my self esteem, having a dope belt I feel good in has brought jeans back into the fold after a decade of no denim.
My favourite purchase this year has for sure been these big Etudes cords. I'm still figuring out where I want my wardrobe to go and am still selling and buying things but I think these will stick around for a while
Biggest thing I got this year was the De Bonne Facture Grandad coat which was a grail of mine for years. Only problem is now I want another one.
The drape 😍
Serious answer is that I don't have one single thing but since I started actually trying to make an effort with how I dress, the best thing I've got out of purchases since the summer is not caring so much about what other people think of what I'm wearing
I'm sure this is a common thing for a lot of guys when they wear things that aren't just run of the mill jeans and tee
This is great!
After essentially never wearing jeans for ~3 years, I found this pair from Hed Mayner in February that I wear a ton. Changed a lot of the pieces I picked up later in the year and gave me flexibility I didn’t have before.
Love those jeans. Pleats 🔥
Excuse you, my jeans and tees come from the finest Japanese mills
Studio Nicholson shirt and guidis are probably my 2 favorite pick ups from this year
oh wait i forgot i bought so much shit this year lmao
Hahaha
My misami coat is probably second place actually
They are so voluminous it is truly fantastic
They work real well in your wardrobe too
Feel like I've posted this as the answer to all these questions but it's this 40s Le Mont St Michel jacket. It has so much visible history and I love wearing it.
This year I copped my first BNWT leather jacket. I've owned two before, one 10 year old mid-quality cowhide by Undercover which I later sold, and a mid-quality lambskin by JohnLawrenceSullivan which some of you may fondly remember I had a hard time selling, until a lost soul wandered into a closed discord, bought my leather jacket, and got banned within a 24 hour period.
I decided that it was time. so I went for it.
I'm now a proud owner of a McCoy's deerskin 30's leather, and it's definitely the most expensive and most incredible thing I own. It took me 10 years of being Into Clothes to get a leather jacket, and I don't think I'll ever part with it.
This is an incredible piece. Congrats
it's one of the few leather jackets that I have seen that fits how I want it to. most nice leather jackets are pretty trad, and I'm a wide guy. this was too ideal to pass up.
My palace anglepoise is up there too as a dumb luxury that I use evey day
Haha, poorly articulated by me as always. Getting past the worry over friends/colleagues making comments like "what are you wearing that for?" I think is a big hurdle for a lot of people at first. I don't even wear anything out there but I'm happy to be past caring about comments like that
ooooh Joc Mccoy's deerskin very nice
Favorite item/s this year probably is this clutch bag and wallet from The Flat Head
Honestly probably these ebay’d miusa 550s that I bought for $37 and wear far more than you all realize.
More broadly, I feel like I'm tuned into myself well enough that I’m much more selective and particular about what I buy. Though there have been a few miscues, usually late on a Friday night, I’m mostly only buying things that I really love, not just like or think I might like or that are a good deal or that generically fit into my wardrobe. My wardrobe is physically shrinking, but I feel like I’m doing more with it, and I find that freeing and somehow peaceful.
