Entitlement server and Discovery server in eSIM
I am new to eSIM technology. I have gone through some online articles on the architecture, which states, discovery server informs user of eSIM profile availability in SMDP+ and accordingly user can download it: https://www.gsma.com/esim/
"The ubiquitous SIM card has played a fundamental role in mobile telecommunications for over 25 years. It is recognised by end users and provides a secure means for authenticating devices onto networks, all inside a removable “Secure Element”, which..."
But is it not the same as what entitlement server does? Can someone also explain what is the role of Entitlement server in eSIM. If possible please also explain the position of ES and DS in eSIM architecture.

The ubiquitous SIM card has played a fundamental role in mobile telecommunications for over 25 years. It is recognised by end users and provides a secure means for authenticating devices onto networks, all inside a removable “Secure Element”, which is easily transferrable between mobile devices. Although the role of the SIM itself is not changin...

Hi, @techielew The Discovery Server (DS) helps eSIM-enabled devices, to find the correct Entitlement Server (ES) during the activation process. And Entitlement Server is responsible for authorization and eSIM profile management. Both DS and ES plays a crucial role in the activation and management of the eSIM profile.
Discovery Server (DS): is part of the eSIM ecosystem and is typically hosted by the MNO or an eSIM service provider. The following are the functions of the DS
- Profile Selection
- Profile Information
- Dynamic Profile Switching
Entitlement Server (ES): is a central component in the backend of a mobile network operator (MNO) or a service provider. The following are the functions of the ES
- Profile Activation
- Subscription Management
- Security
This means as soon as eSIM activates in the device. The information of Discovery Server which comes with the device helps to find Entitlement Server. Then, ES will take care of everything till the life cycle of the eSIM
I hope this may help, have a good day!
