thinking of picking up one or two sweaters for layering in cold weather, something to combine with a button down shirt and tweed or flannel sport coat

Turtleneck, crew neck, v-neck, all standard options. Plain texture, fuzzy and chunky (think shetland), ribbed, cable-knit, or boucle, are all common. Though not much point wearing an OCBD under a turtleneck unless you plan to take it off at some point (ie, commute, then working indoors where it's not cold.)

Commuting and then working indoors where it's not cold is exactly why I'm wanting one, yes ^^ Anything to watch out for with colour?

Pretty much the standard palette. Neutral colors and dark colors are pretty easy. Shades of gray including black, shades of darker blue, ivory/cream/oatmeal, earths, rusts, and olives, taupes, and fawns, especially when desaturated, all work great. Well, mostly all, just in general.

I personally loathe these types of thin business casual sweaters. I'd opt for a shetland or just something with more weight

hmm, Vinted here is kinda sparse for more substantial sweaters

this might be nice? 60% wool, 40% cashmere

haven't found a fitting round or v-neck sweater yet but I think this one will do nicely for when I'm not wearing a OCBD under it
