There are differences. It depends on your approach, Shield is also fantastic. Althenect is a good and simple approach to using Spatie roles and permissions, but make sure you know about spatie roles and permssions prior as this is the underlying system of the plugin.

The readme's explains both if you read them you can see which one is capable of what you want. Neither is better, but both are different depending on your use case. For what you have now asked for it sounds like you want Althinect
