Ah someone else had this issue and I didn’t know the fix besides installing fabric then putting Iris and Sodium in the mods folder, which worked for them

I would recommend 17 either way but if it’s just to run Jar files then 8 is fine

But again Java 8 is fine for just running jar files. You only need 17 to actually run Minecraft 1.18 (I think) and newer, which the vanilla launcher already comes packaged with
*1.17

from Minecraft 1.17, Minecraft uses Java 16 (which is not an LTS, so Java 17 is recommended), before switching to Java 17 in 1.18.

you shouldn't run the installer once you have fabric. Just click play in the launcher

it shouldn't give you that error then, because that error is for the installer
maybe you need to try a third-party launcher. The vanilla one isn't really that great. I would recommend Prism Launcher

i found out smth from a friend and it worked now
what was the fix?
its an 3rd party app called cloudfare warp
so basically you used another DNS to bypass whatever was blocking github, good that it worked
