Wedding Welcome Party Outfit

I’m going to a family wedding this weekend. The welcome party is smart casual. My grandfather died earlier this year, and I inherited this black/white houndstooth sport coat that I’m wearing for the welcome party. I know it’s a bit tricky to pull off, what with it being several decades old and definitely not on trend. But I’m definitely wearing it, as it’s important to me, and some others will be wearing other jackets of his as well. With that said, how would you recommend styling it? I’ve got plenty of shirts, pants, and shoes (and ties and pocket squares) of various levels of formality, but I haven’t been able to figure out anything that works. Thoughts?

Hah I thought you were @tortfeasor_ and was wondering why you didn't want to wear the brown trousers Because of the recent conversation Anyways. What do you have that you're trying to choose from? I got rid of my ecru/black houndstooth jacket but before I did, let me think. Charcoal, brown, navy trousers are easy. An oxford cloth pale blue shirt, and some decent shoes?

What does it look like on you? The fit is gonna change what works and what doesn't imo. Colorwise i would think a navy or black pants in a textured fabric like corduroy or a woolen flannel would be my first thoughts with a light blue ocbd (maybe cream if you have it lol) and some burgundy long wings and you just man

I wore houndstooth to the last wedding I attended. I’d go: black pants, black footwear, white shirt, add in some color with tie/scarf

It’s definitely a relaxed cut on me; the shoulders are a good fit (if a bit on the boxy side for today’s style), but it’s a bit big in the body (sadly, I ran out of time to get it tailored). Plus the wide lapels stand out. I do have some navy cords, though they’re definitely on the more casual side. None of my wool pants are flannel, though I do have all the basic colors available. I do have a light blue ocbd. Don’t have a cream one but I do have a cream point collar poplin shirt that I hardly ever wear I do have all of those. It felt a little blah to me but maybe that’s good given that the jacket is more of a statement piece. I’ve got OCBDs in blue, white, and pink, a few others in patterns (a couple different blue stripes, two checkers), plus some other shirts that are probably too casual. I’ve also got a full array of dress shirts. As far as pants I’ve got wool slacks in tan, brown, blue, gray, and black, and basically every color of chino you could ever want (and a couple you probably wouldn’t want). I was also going back and forth on a tie; I was thinking possibly a knit tie? For shoes, I’ve got black oxfords, brown Oxford, two brown derbies, and a couple others that are probably too casual.

Dang, that's less a houndstooth and more a ... megalodon tooth or something. And full suit from it? Loud! I like the old strategy - one bolder item, or all aligned in formality. I'd probably go for brown slacks or tan chinos, brown derbies, ice blue ocbd, and either no tie or a casual tie.

Is it black or brown? I’d vote dark gray/charcoal trousers and white shirt to give you flexibility with tie and shoes. You could try to go with pants that are light enough to still contrast (stone/white/ecru depending on what color the jacket is) but this is harder to get right.
