Double versus single monk straps
Does anyone have strong preferences? Double monk straps seem much more common, but is there a reason for this? Is one of the two more casual or dressy?

Single monk is more dressy of the two.

Single strap is more formal. But like the others said they are a bit out of style right now. They were very in style early 2010s. However, according to the WSJ they're making a come back: https://archive.ph/gez1T

I would refrain from getting monk straps if they're your only formal shoes. But if you have multiple pairs and you really like the look, why the hell not?
Just be aware that there is a very previous decade vibe to it
Yeah, good point. If you already have good shoes, who cares. If these are your only dress shoes, choose classic options instead
