I don't understand S/M/L/XL trouser sizing

I've been trying to figure out trouser sizing, I have my measurements (31 Inch Waist, 30 Inside Leg/Inseam). I'm trying to buy some new trousers and have no idea what size I should buy - all my current trousers use Waist / Inseam format. I think my confusion comes from the fact that I usually wear a large in my shirts and t-shirts but websites seem to sort me into Small or sometimes Medium for trousers. Is it normal to be very different sizes for tops and bottoms?

Not uncommon alpha sizing on pants is lame imo, but most brands should have a size chart that will help. alpha sizing is usually found on stuff with elastic/adjustable waists and more casual styles (sweats, track pants, shorts etc)

31W 30L does sound like it would be size S as well, to answer that part. It's not uncommon to be different sizes for tops and bottoms. Men's waist sizes in off the rack clothing don't often go below W28, so call that XS. Then 30 - 32 for S, and so on

tbh i wouldn't order bottoms that are alpha sizing without a size chart for the same reasons as mentioned above. not really worth it imo!
