Self-hosting vs. cloud hosting
I've noticed a lot of people say that its better to use cloud hosting rather than self-hosting. is this mostly because most people don't know how to self-host properly or because their is something inherently worse about hosting it yourself on dedicated hardware you have?

Most people don't self host because it can be complicated, and not everyone has good hardware already available so it doesn't usually make sense to buy it. Then those who have good hardware and the know how might have shit internet. So very few are actually able to self host with much success, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't if you have these 3 things available to you. If you have the right stuff, then its really just following tutorials for protecting your home IP and setting up a panel if you want one. There's ways of making your own backups as well like a host would offer
So inferior? No. Just not as many people can pull it off
Having said that, you really don't need much for just a small friends server like 1-5 people. Playit.gg is a quick way to make it join able to friends, and at that player count you really could run it off most hardware made in the last 5 years.
