Picking up new hardware for a home server

Hello, Since I updated my home server to 1.20, we are experiencing lag and other "coughups". I feel like we're reaching the end of what my current hardware can do. I tried everything I could to expand it's lifetime but alas nothing last forever. I'm not up to date on what's the best CPU on the market for Minecraft. The current hardware I have is very old (10 years old in fact) and had a great running but as I'll get a higher paycheck due to changing jobs, I feel like there is no better time to switch to something more powerful. I've been looking into AMD Cpus, specifically the Ryzen 9 familly, they have a very high clock speed, which sounds great for Minecraft. But at the same time, Ryzen 9 uses AMD5 that only supports DDR5. From what I've gathered, while CPU-wise it will be a straight upgrade, I'm not too sure about it RAM-Wise. DDR5 is pretty new and it shows in terms of CLs (Ill be going from 10 to 40 !). So my question would be : is it the right time to upgrade ? Should I go for these brand-new hardware or use AMD4/DDR4 instead (more cheap and reliable) ? If you have any other tips or new info about hardware for Minecraft, I'll all hears. Most of my knowledge is from 6 to 5 years ago now. Thanks. Current specs : Intel Core i5-4570 (3.2 GHz) 24gb of RAM 1600 MHz CL10 (8gb dedicated to the server) Running on a Debian system

I only found 2... And I don't mind if it's a Ryzen 7 or 5, I just want to not spend a ton of money in 2 or 3 years if I need to switch to AMD5/DDR5. I usually buy hardware and make it last for 7 if not 10 years (such as this one) Also I've seen more and more people getting into AMDs for Servers, but before that Intel was much better at handling single-core performance (which was more important for MC) in fact when I (re)started my server long ago, I bought a AMD Athlon X4 950, which had a higher speed clock, but actually using it we got way worse performances and I had to switch it back to that i5 that was from my previous gaming machine... so while I'm saying that I kinda want to get an AMD, at first I looked at Intel 'coz I don't want to pay half the price but getting half the performance. That's also why I said "If you have any other tips or new info about hardware for Minecraft, I'll all hears. Most of my knowledge is from 6 to 5 years ago now."

Yeah last gen ryzen is really cheap for what it is You'll have to upgrade ram anyway You could also go with something like a 12600K and have the upgrade path to a future 14900K, though that'd only be like ~20% better single core in the long run before you're sitting on another dead platform Ryzen 5000 is super cheap as a platform, efficient, and capable, but that's the last generation on that platform (so if you want to upgrade from there, you'll need new everything) Ryzen 7000 has a guaranteed upgrade path for at least 3-4 more years from now, is more efficient than Intel, matches 13th Gen performance, but ofc is the most expensive Oh and for a little bit of reference: Ryzen 5000 < Intel 12th < Ryzen 7000 ≈ Intel 13th in performance If you're on a budget I would honestly go with something like a 5900X or 5800X, or a 12600K+ if the whole build is of similar price But if you want to be able to have a drop-in CPU upgrade of >50% uplift without touching anything else in 3-10 years, ryzen 7000 is where it's at

Money isn't an issue honestly, I just like to make the right choice so that I don't have to change midcourse like I did back in the day with the Athlon Thank for the insight

Anytime! Oh and, clock speeds aren't that important nowadays They're a factor but not the entire story

What I should look for in a CPU then ?

for mc? single threaded score
Naeso
NaesoOP2y ago
well the CPUs with the best score also are the ones with the highest clock speed

Yeah? Oh and don't use UserBenchmark for benchmarks In case you're using that

You said this, but then I found out that the best CPU score are the ones that got an high clock speed. What I should look for in a CPU if it it's only the clock speed ?

They're still a big factor but not the entire story, to reiterate But the single thread/single core scores are what you're looking for Which you said you have

On top of hardware, you should also make sure ur doing everything on the software end to prevent lag, (ie, proper spigot fork, correct flags, pregen, etc)

That is something I already do, thus why I said "I feel like we're reaching the end of what my current hardware can do. I tried everything I could to expand it's lifetime but alas nothing last forever." !solved
