Help Decide New Server Specs!

Hey all, I recently started up a Minecraft server that has quickly became more popular than I thought. We're getting 10-25 players on at most given times and run an extra resource world dimension and getting some TPS lag now. I'm looking to upgrade server as I want to reduce lag and have room to grow, with the goal of 25-50 players on at any given time. We're running about 35 plugins and ALL the maps are preloaded. Some plugins we have... (mainly basic things) warps, economy, chestshops, griefprevention, commandbook, craftbook, worldguard and so fourth with the heaviest things being Realistic Seasons and DynMap. Here are two server options. Which do you think would be better? Or should I look at other things completely? Cheers OPTION A Processor Intel Xeon E3 1245v5 - 4c/8t - 3.5 GHz/3.9 GHz Memory 32GB DDR4 ECC 2133MHz Storage 2× 480GB SSD SATA Soft RAID OPTION B Processor Intel Xeon E5-1630v3 - 4c/8t - 3.7 GHz/3.8 GHz Memory 64GB DDR4 ECC 2133MHz Storage 2× 480GB SSD SATA Soft RAID

If you're going through a hosting service, you shouldn't be looking at Xeons if you're after top performance. Ryzen 5950 or 7950 would be your target And unless you're doing a hub/network/mutli server setup, don't use that much ram

I see. Ryzens will cost be substantially more and I've found a deccent sale on the above servers for rent. I've been considering self-hosting and building something but in the long run the money saved might not be worth the hassle. I have the internet connection and ability to do it as I own my own company and we have the connection for it there. I think what's most enticing to me is the fact that I can just upgrade the server at any time if I'm renting. If I build something I'm going to have to reconfigure components and rebuy parts

is it just one server?

It is currently just one server, yes. With a goal of 25-50 players. Eventually whenever that is reached and the player base has grown, I will plan to open another world or two (a game world and anarchy server) But I could upgrade again then as neither of these servers require a contract length and I don't mind spending a day or two configuring Linux/setting it up. I actually enjoy it.

And what would these cost a month?

I can get option B for a huge discount right now of only about $30/month (plus a $50 setup) Or option A for around $50/month (with no setup cost)

Is there anything with a better CPU such as a ryzen 7/5950x

There's a Ryzen 5 but it's a 3600X. 32gb of ddr4 2666 and 2 nvme. This will be closer to $70 tho And I have to agree to a 1 year contract on it

You shouldn't need a dedi for a server of your size

I guess I should note, I also run an array of several web servers for what my company does. It makes more sense for me to get a dedicated server to run Minecraft and my other stuff. Rather than renting a Minecraft server and then a small dedicated server Cost-wise it just makes no sense to split them up

Generally unless you're hosting a large large network, building your own dedi for the purpose of self hosting makes no sense. Most people who self-host use existing hardware like an old pc which is why it makes sense for them Even a Ryzen 3900x beats out that Xeon in terms of Minecraft

Per the rules I cannot specify particular hosts, but one example:

5950x for a price you're in range of, but with a 5950x and not that Xeon

I have an old AMD A8 I was considering using at first whenever I started this but I dont think it'll be able to keep up with what we're doing now haha

For your current size probably wouldn't be ideal

I have zero interest in Minecraft hosting. I need a dedicated server. Thats $24/month, I assume USD. works out to $35 cad. Then I would have to geta dedicated server to run my network of webservers, im now at $65 or so a month. Not worth it.

Up to you, for most what you plan doesn't make sense but you're in a unique position. But pls no Xeons, there is much better value in Ryzen

Okay I will look into Ryzen options. I started this thread to understand more about what performs well for MC servers these days and consider my options for a dedicated.

Single threaded performance above all, the higher base/boost clock the better (almost always)

I also have an old PC with an i7-4790... I rarely use it, could be retired to a server. Dunno if that would be worth it though?
