Looking to improve the design of this aoe2 elo page
This is a first pass on a page refactor for an Age of Empires II tournament ELO database.
Browsing other examples of ELO ranking pages, they almost universally look like they were designed in the 90s or they are over the top with flashy, distracting bs and flooded with too much info. It seems very difficult to find a middle ground between those when you are forced into such heavy table style data.
The audience for this page is a challenge, because it needs to appeal to admins who just want easy access to the data for tournament purposes, but also for a general audience who will need a bit more 'flair' in the design to stay interested.
I'm looking for suggestions on how to give this page more of an 'Age of Empires II' feel while adhering to modern design principles. I really don't want to just insert game graphics or fonts, but I'm kind of hitting a creative wall, so if anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate them.

I know you said you don't want to just add game graphics/fonts, but I think it could be worth a look into adding a lot of the website's elements into your own. This helps make it a bit more like AoE as well as giving a familiar feel for people that visit your site (as they'd already be playing AoE and presumably visited the website)
I think the texture they added and the gold line dividers are pretty cool, maybe you could try adding those in somehow?
One easy place to experiment with their texture could be on this card
For your buttons you could try to have a similar hover animation as theirs
Also personally not a fan of the font, just personal preference but I think that could also be contributing to not having an AoE feel
Oh and I'd say you definitely need some more top padding for this card and maybe experiment with toning down the heading font-size too?
yeah i think you might be right, this particular card could be a good place to inject 'aoe-ness'.
but on the other hand this card is kind of a holdover of the current page, and I don't really want to include it at all 😄
this is an open source project maintained by a bunch of people, and all the admins are basically against any kind of changes, so I have to oh so slowly phase pieces out
Omg that sounds annoying haha
