How do pluguins exactly work?
Im mostly referring to are they like mods? Like lets say a pluguin updated from 1.19 to 1.20, can i still use the new version on my 1.19 server or do i have to update the server to 1.20?

some plugins can work on 1.20 if they were made on 1.19. It call depends on how the developer made the plugin
or how game changing the Minecraft update is
1.19 -> 1.20 had very few changes in the backend, so most big plugins made on 1.19 worked on 1.20. Obviously the 1.19 plugins might not have support for some of the newer features, but they’d still work.
Typically for updates the best plan of action is use Via, so u still have a 1.19 server but 1.20 players can join, and u sit on that until all ur core plugins update
most of the times nms is the only reason a older plugin cant work on a newer version and vice-versa
Nms is something the developer has to add tho (is needed for some things)
Surprised no one mentioned this yet, but most of the time plugins will work on newer version without updating the plugin. For example vault hasn’t been updated in forever and still works on 1.20.1. A big caveat to this however is if the plugin depends on Minecraft nms (net.Minecraft.server). If it does, you must update the plugin when updating the Minecraft version the server runs on. Otherwise you will likely get error codes and the plugin will not work.
As for your exact question, if you are however updating the plugin and not the server, as in say you have a 1.19 server with 1.20 plugins, it should be compatible provided it doesn’t add some new feature that requires 1.20, nms usually being a problem as well. Just don’t update plugins without updating the server lol.
Yeah nvm, I was trying to run cardboard and tried to make it run pluguins that run for 1.19 and it didn’t work so it seems cardboard doesn’t work that well
That’s why I asked this question
Hybrids are bad.
Yeah I was just curious as if it could work
I ran a server with 1.19 fabric + cardboard and tried pluguins but while the commands did appear, the pluguins themselves didn’t work
So I assumed it was a pluguin issue but it seems Cardboard was the issue
Kinda sad
Really the question was more like “Why won’t cardboard work?” But I asked this because I was unsure what the issue is
I’m doing this because I want to run fabric with pluguins
Avoid using server software that combines both mod and plugin APIs, such as Mohist, Magma, Cauldron, Thermos, CatServer, Cardboard, and others. These server software clash, as Bukkit was made for plugins and Forge for mods. Mixing them requires significant changes to the CraftBukkit and Forge server code. If not done correctly, both plugins and mods can act strangely. Using these could mean we are unable to help you.
If you are running 1.8-1.16.5 (excluding 1.13-1.15), a good alternative to these is SpongeForge, a well-engineered solution that allows running SpongeAPI plugins alongside Forge mods. Many Bukkit plugins also have Sponge ports.

Im running on 1.20
Fabric
this is just a copy paste
1.16.5 also has a sponge forge version
Oh gotcha

Interesting read aswell
I do not want to run Forge as I might be wrong but Forge does not have geyser
And the players in my server want to play on 1.20 so
I guess I’ll just stick to fabric mods
Welp, thanks for the help, I’ll just stick to either using fabric and using mods, or using paper and using pluguins for it
