Look up jarfix and run that program. It should fix your issue

What is Jarfix and how does it help?
Jarfix is a tool that can be used to fix issues where .jar files don't launch, due to their associations being hijacked, on double-click. You can download it from https://johann.loefflmann.net/downloads/jarfix.exe

i have it downloaded now, but im not sure if there's anything that i need to do with it? i made it go through a scan but idk if anything happened, since i tried downloading irishaders again, and its the same issue And it may seem like it downloads irisshaders to the right program, but i dont think it does though. Cus i set that program to be the program it would download it in And i've actually gotten my friend to download it at the exact same time with the exact same downloads, and his just worked totally fine, while mine keeps downloading it to the wrong apps

Try just installing iris from Modrinth like a normal mod
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
I have already tried that, and my friends tried to help with it too, but it still says the same
Slooshie
Slooshie16mo ago
What do you mean it says the same? You just plop the modrinth files in your mods folder
green512
green51216mo ago
Can you tell us what happens when you double click on the Iris installer now after running Jarfix? Is it the same error as before or different?
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
yeah its the same error. And about the modrinth, im unsure what you mean. If you mean the link that i can download it through modrinth it still dosnt work?
Slooshie
Slooshie16mo ago
The modrinth files and the installer are completely different The modrinth files go in mods folder after installing fabric You don’t run it

supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
I have like multiple times 🥲 i just tried uninstalling all java and redownload it, but it still dosnt work
ioblackshaw
ioblackshaw16mo ago
if youre trying to drag it directly from your browser window that normally just runs it. you'll have to go to your downloads folder and drag iris-mc1.20-1.6.4.jar from there into your minecraft mods folder
green512
green51216mo ago
What version of java are you installing? I don't know why you guys are telling them to put the file in the mods folder, because if they can't run the Iris installer there's a very high chance they haven't run the Fabric installer and don't have a fabric loader.
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
Haha i really cant find my minecraft folder though, cant search for it and cant find it tho what is the fabric loader?
ioblackshaw
ioblackshaw16mo ago
Fabric
Installation for Minecraft Launcher
The home of the Fabric mod development toolchain.

green51216mo ago
Iris is a fabric mod, it needs the fabric loader. The Iris installer will install that for you.

is it this one then?
green512
green51216mo ago
well you don't need the full JDK but it's fine, just a little extra disk space but yes Java 17 is required for minecraft these days. last version that supported java 8 was 1.16.x

I mean it still says this when i try to download iris...? i feel like it may download iris into a wrong app or something, because it started out as an internet explorer file download, and then i changed it to that java it may try to download it down on? not too sure

Your file associations are still trying to open the .jar file with a different program. Rerun jarfix.

I don't know why it's asking that but I would say no, you should have a JRE from the JDK you just installed. Did you uninstall Java 8?
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
I think so? it wont let me download it without at least, so i'll reinstall java 8 ig, it sends me directly to a link to download it
green512
green51216mo ago
No, do not install Java 8. Go to add/remove programs and remove any version of Java. Then go back to Adoptium, select Windows, JRE, Java 17 LTS, x64, install that. Jar files should open then.
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
Yeah under add/remove programs, i cant even find a java, which seems weird because i must have downloaded it. I can send a screenshot
green512
green51216mo ago
it probably won't say Java in the name, do a search on JDK or JRE (programmers are terrible at naming things)
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
Lol, there is only this though? i cant find any java

its the same program, no java only that one
green512
green51216mo ago
Hmm, okay well I guess jarfix is just severely confused. Right click on the Iris installer, choose Open With, navigate to where Adoptium installed its files, probably under \Program Files\, and select javaw.exe as the program to use (it will be under bin\).
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
Im not sure i quite catch that, i have pressed "open with" and im like on my files menu, where do i look for what to open it with? i have javasetup.exe
green512
green51216mo ago
it should go like Open With -> Choose another app -> Scroll all the way down, 'Choose app on PC' -> Windows explorer, navigate to javaw.exe (whereever you chose to install it, probably something like C:\Program Files\Adoptium\[version something]\bin\javaw.exe)
supersebber04
supersebber04OP16mo ago
this is what it looks like, but where do i go, since you say "navigate to javaw.exe" which i dont know where is exactly, and i cant search for it
