How I Buy Clothes

https://alittlebitofrest.com/2023/07/23/how-i-buy-clothes/ Wrote this (and did a pod) on how I buy clothes and ultimately how I engage with fashion. TL;DR: being into vintage very early on exposed me to a lot of ideas and classic menswear designs, so i developed specific taste. Now I just buy things I couldn't find before rather than constantly "discovering" new things. Discovery still does happen (like with Visvim) but its usually tied to something I already like, rather than being jarring. in other words, try to hone taste, try on stuff, and explore things so that way you'll be in the right place to buy it ...or move on from it!

I really liked the article it's pretty helpfull as someone just starting out trying to create a better wardrobe. I like that you go into the actual reasoning for your advice. The opposite leads to cargo cult thinking

thank you for reading! i really hope that it inspires people to be intentional. not eveyrones wardrobe should be the same, but we should defintiely all take care to curate and introspect so we dont waste money!

Also really enjoyed this article. I feel quite self-conscious about my 'desire' phase also being verry long, so it was nice to read about it in your article as a really crucial and formative time for you!

That’s very interesting! I keep my desire going slightly differently. I almost never put a specific item on my grail list. So I won’t put “Allen Edmonds Stradmok” on my list. Instead I put “casual brown lace up” That way, even when I get the item, it feels new and fresh.

hahah i mention this in my blog post btu i think my difference is that thanks to being into vintage, ive seen a lot of variations of existing thingsf i saw tyrolean shoes before i knew what paraboots were i knew about high waisted pants before they started trending in the current zeitgeist i liked big DB suits before i knew about armani (or maybe because i was young, it was simultaneous) so in a similar way i dont really put anything on my grail list ( i dont think i have a real grail list anyway) but there are things i have my eyes open for

This is a great philosophy. I'm interested in how you save up for certain items you have a lot of "desire" for and think are worth it, like the Aldens you mentioned. How does that work for you? Do you have a monthly budget? If so, how does that work for you?

Im honestly not the greatest with budgeting! but by that i mean, i dont have a specific fund. Its more soft budgeting, where if i know i want to get something, ill make sure NOT to buy anything else. this means not going to thrift stores, being cautious how often i go out but also at this point, i kinda already know what i want and i already spend less per month beacuse ive acquired my wardrobe over the past decade so im not buying all the time! and for now, i already bought the aldens, so im free to save for other things!
