Risks of running public server on home network
Hey all, I already posted this question yesterday in general and got some really helpful answers but I wanted to get some other perspectives on the issue before I make any decisions.
For context, my network is fast enough, and so it the computer running the server. I am running it on the same network that basically all of my personal devices are connected to, forwarding only port 25565.
I’m wondering how risky it would be to have this port open to the internet, and how I could potentially protect myself, since i don’t want to play with my own personal security here.

Well if u don't want to play with your security Use a host
But ddos is the main risk
Issue is free tier doesn't work with bedrock and has limited bandwidrh
(if he decides to have bedrock support)
U need to pay 100 usd a month for a bedrock supported plan
Bedrock supported plan cost 100 usd a month
Discord mobile
On slow internet is a mess
how would i do this
only home host for trusted friends
that's my advice
I would reccomend PebbleHost. Extremely cheap and I have had excellent performance with a VPS before. Then you don't have anything to worry about and they offer ddos protection
this would be for hosting the entire server on?
or for forwarding connections securely
hosting entire server
oh
my server isn’t making any income so i can’t really justify paying out of pocket for that much
aren’t there vps services that can just forward connections?
like amazon, azure, google, etc
those are gonna be alot more expensive
tcpshield free tier works but doesnt work with bedrock
and doesnt work for more than like 20 players average
oracle cloud could work
if ur willing to pay 5 dollars a month
mullvad VPN lets you port forward
that way you don't get hit
$5/month is reasonable for me
i’m willing to do that
actually
wait
Mullvad VPN
Removing the support for forwarded ports - Blog | Mullvad VPN
Today we announce that we no longer support port forwarding. New port forwards will no longer be supported, and existing ports will be removed 2023-07-01.
oh great
any other services that do this?
purevpn does iirc
no idea if its good
i have a subscription for that already
so what’s my best bet?
in terms of securing myself as much as possible while still having all the compute power coming from my own pc
probably wont have the best antiddos but would hide ur own ip probably
or tcpshield free tier
Yes a single server not bungee
i still want to home host
just securely
It's not really an option to do that unless you do some rlly complicated stuff and have ddos protection an an advanced firewall manager for your home network.
vps forwarding wouldn’t work?
Not sure, I'm not good in the area of port forwarding and stuff like that.
could this work?
i found this on reddit
thats what we told u u could do
i know, I just wanted to 100% confirm it because i got like 5 different answers in here
also are there any guides on getting this to work with pebblehost?
my server is bedrock supported so tcpshield wont work for me
i'm fine paying like $1-8 per month or something
Ok I consider it, thanks!
