Raw Denim Advice/Recommendations (5'6" Male)
Hello, I am looking for a recommendation for jeans, specifically raw denim that would look pretty solid on a shorter guy (5'6"/168cm). I am quite skinny with a 28inch waist, but as an athlete I have decently wide thighs.
My favorite jeans I have owned are from the now-discontinued, stacked guy from Naked and Famous. Although in moving with more recent trends, would be keen for recommendations on a straighter, or more relaxed fit.
Ideally, I would look more for jeans that feature a zip-fly over a button-fly just for it being easier as someone with arthritic fingers.
My budget is in the $100-300 CAD range.

NGL, button hooks are very useful. Would recommend.
check out the new N&F "true guy" fit for something that's more of a 2023-esque straight fit
anything most N&F is gonna be button fly though
hm ya can't think of a lot of zip fly. maybe orslow 105s?
I have N&F with zipper fly
neat
thought they only did button
my 105s are button, are there more?
oh weird, my 107s are zip fly
You could also look at selfedge and use their denim finder.
yeah 105 is button 107 is zip. kinda like how levi's 501 is button and other models are zip

i'd say your height won't make much of a difference, just budget for a hem.
It can be a different depending on the build. The rise needed for somebody that's 5'6 is different from somebody who is 6' even if it's the same waist size.
*disclaimer this is a generalization and not universal
fair point!
I'm the exception as somebody who is 5'3 and likes a very high rise.
Sounds good
Why would this be the case?
What do you mean?
I mean somebody who is 5'6 with a 30 inch waist has a very different build from someone who is 6 foot with a 30 inch waist. Somebody who is 6' is generally longer from belly button to the bottom of the crotch compared to somebody shorter.
I think I have a large torso, small legs but will look for a picture to see if you agree

Very cool
Sorry for shirtless, if that offends you, ignore, but I think proportionally I am larger torso then legs. Not sure how that would impact the pant fit I would go with

Button Hook
Button boots and shoes can be hard to fasten, especially when using one's hands. With the help of a button hook this process becomes much easier and faster, so if you ever wear button styles, this is a tool worth investing in! Would Orslows and N&F True guy be your general recommendations though?

True Guy - Midnight Slub Stretch Selvedge
The Midnight Slub Stretch Selvedge is a 12.5oz indigo rope dyed Japanese selvedge denim with an uneven “slubby” surface texture combined with a black weft interior. To achieve the texture, bumpy irregular shaped slub yarns are used in combination with loose slow weaving techniques. The result is an uneven organic grain

True Guy - Solid Black Selvedge
The Solid Black Selvedge is a 13oz black Japanese selvedge denim. Both the warp and weft are sulfur-dyed black to create a pitch-black denim. The denim is woven on vintage shuttle looms in a right hand twill construction with a classic red line selvedge ID. Cut, sewn, built in Canada with black stitching, a full-grain
Any recommendation between the two?
I have black boost. It has a zipper
Love these from left field. Non selvedge but it’s dead stock cone white oak and the denim is very nice. I love the Atlas fit which has a lot more room in thighs. https://leftfieldnyc.com/collections/charles-atlas/products/atlas-broken-twill-cone-zipper-fly-american-classic

The Atlas Zipper Denim Jeans have a similar top block to the greaser with plenty of room for those with muscular thighs but want a tapered leg opening. Please check the measurement table before ordering.
They only go down to a 30 though i just saw your a 28 sorry :/
I am also a fan of the atlas
But I think it's more of a taper than a straight leg
Is this something that I shouldn't mess with as far as tailoring?
Do you have a link by any chance?
Don't think I do but they're a few seasons old
The Solid Black True guy doesn's say on the website
I’ve tailored jeans down one size with no issues but i probably wouldn’t go further than that cause it could make the back pockets a little too close together
Okay, I've had to get even the 28" N&F jeans taken in, so I don't think it's worth the risk for me
@legoghostyoda do you have a place in your area that sells raw denim?
Im just asking bc trying it on for yourself if you can is the best first option
Not really for where I live in Canada
Gotcha
where do you live?

damn you weren't kidding
Yeaaa hahaha
Would the OrSlow 107s be a fit/style you would recommend?
They're more tapered than straight. I love mine, but I don't think they're necessarily what you're looking for
These are my 107s. I think 105s are more straight legged but potentially still kinda slim
Do you have any pants that you’d like your new jeans to fit like? You could measure those and use that as a framework when you’re shopping
Thats really clever, thanks for the idea
This is the fit style I'm going for! I think it suits my legs well, right now I just have a lot of slim-fitting bordering on skinny pants, or just unfashionable GORP pants.
They appear to be a slightly less slim stacked guy from N&F in fit, but you could correct me on that if I am wrong @xmdot
They're a shorter inseam to start at I think 31", so they're not naturally going to stack. I did have these hemmed as well. I'm around 5'8" for reference. Not familiar with the stacked guy unfortunately.
I do really like the look and overall fit!
I will be a shorter inseam than that at 5'6"
yeah I think I had these hemmed to a 28-29" so I could still cuff, somewhere around there.
As a Canadian that is also looking at diving into getting a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers/Mocs, I'll prob still be looking to cuff
ya you can still double cuff. am canadian and wear them with red wings sometimes.
I have mainly just neglected trying to have decent fashion taste for too long haha
