is it worth it to buy a suit if I am actively trying to lose weight?
Hey guys, I am currently in the process of cutting (aiming for 30-40 lbs) and thinking of buying a High end suit (suit supply blue line). I currently have a “suit” from Uniqlo that I wear to more formal events. Not sure if it’s worth to splash the money if I am not going to have a big personal event soon. Any thoughts?

might suggest looking at thrifting a suit if you're looking to lose that amount of weight and don't have a strict need for a suit any time soon
I found a half decent J Crew suit for like $90 on Grailed, got some minor alterations and that'll hold me over until I get serious and lose the 20-30lbs that I probably should

So, I can offer my personal perspective. I've lost 50 lbs this year and had to replace my whole wardrobe. But I'm not ready to spend significant money on a suit. I'm still getting used to being a different weight, and building confidence that I can keep the weight off. I've picked up some cheap blazers etc., but I feel like it's only sensible to wait awhile before spending $500-$1000 or more on a suit.

If you need a suit, then fine. But might be better to keep it cheap to avoid future regret.
Your suit size is going to change if you lose that much weight. From personal experience, I’m 6’3” and lost 40 pounds resulting in me going from 44L to 38L. Get something cheap for now if you must, and wait to get something nice until after you have lost the weight.
I'm in this situation right now. Lost a bunch of weight, sizes are all different now, and I'm redoing the wardrobe (and despite what I thought, still making some mistakes doing so). Have some more pounds to go, and feeling confident about it since I'm far into it.
I have 1-2 suit-wearing occasions coming up, then afaik a break for a few months before needing a suit again (
needing
doing a lot of work here, I am still wearing sport coats that I had altered).
As much as I want to jump into a great suit, I'm probably going to go secondhand. I figure I'm better off reselling that back online when I'm done, rather than getting a new cheaper suit. I'm still looking around, have a few more weeks before I need to make a decision, but leaning hard that way.
my 2c: If you're confident in your weight loss, I'd hold off on high end. The alterations can only go so far.I’ve lost 10 pounds this past month and my suit jacket fits me significantly different. I’d just go the cheap route and thrift or get something secondhand and take it to a tailor: definitely don’t get attached to clothes
I would hold off for now if you’re actively losing weight. Maybe even save up more for something bespoke. There are many closets filled with clothes people plan to wear when they lose weight and if life happens and you aren’t able to wear it, you’ve thrown that money away
This is bad advice.
"I own a Uniqlo suit"..."save up for something bespoke".
The suit op is looking at is about 400 dollars. All I’m saying is while he’s losing weight he can save up for a nicer suit. There are a few tailors in my area that do bespoke starting around $1k. Granted that depends on the materials you pick but a suit will last you years if not decades, might as well invest in it and get something that fits you perfectly, made of high quality materials
There is nearly no point going bespoke if you don't know what you want in a bespoke suit at any price, and unless you live outside the US you aren't getting an actual bespoke suit for $1k. Your recommendation remains double the budget for the second suit this person might have owned/ever purchased.
Well yeah, that’s why I said to save up while losing weight. I’ve lost 40 lbs and it can take 6 months to a year. I think saving for something higher quality and versatile is a better investment. However it’s totally his choice. Suit supply makes decent stuff and he could go with 2 suits saving up while he cuts down.
"hold off on a nice suit" is good advice but "save up for bespoke" isn't - almost nobody is buying a bespoke suit these days. The necessary budget is roughly $4k.
I was quoted $1700-$2000
for bespoke or MTM?
pretty sure bespoke, although I'm out of my depth.
Tailor in Chicago. My wife got some shirts there, and had multiple fittings. For a suit the process would be similar. Multiple fittings, custom pattern, etc.
to be fair, $1700-$2000 sounded like the minimum. 2 piece, standard fabric, etc.
I've no doubt you could easily spend $4k.

multiple fittings and custom pattern does sound like bespoke, yeah
In any case, though, I probably would't call suit supply blue line a "high end suit". Half canvas, maybe barely made-to-measure.
That’s not bespoke, that’s made to measure
You won’t pay less than 7k for bespoke
Also- if you plan to lose more than 20 pounds, stick with a cheap suit
if they make you a custom pattern isn't it bespoke? vs MTM they use an existing pattern but alter it
Yes, that was my understanding as well.
(I'd trust what puma says over me fyi)
I’m sure they’re just editing a pattern, making an entire new custom pattern costs more than 1.7k-2k
If it’s less than a year-year and a half process it’s made to measure
"bespoke" and "mtm" both seem to cover a lot of territory, with some ambiguity and overlap.
A lot of places claim to be bespoke when they’re made to measure
Just a heads up
How tough are you to fit off the rack?
I thought this was a thread about buying a suit and losing weight?
Didn’t realize the OP wasn’t the one asking about bespoke and we were going off the rails, my complete bad
Who moderates the mods? (The mods started the derailment)
My bad.
You won’t pay less than 7k for bespokeAbsofuckinglutely wrong bro But yeah, wrong thread.
