Couple questions about building a home server

Hey everyone, looking to build a server. 12700k, z690A- Pro MB, 16 GB DDR4-3200 1. The above should be a very powerful server correct? 2. Servers primarily scale lineraly with single core performance? (I know many things are multithread, but the main generation and tick process happens single threaded right?) 3. Do RAM speed and SSD speed matter? 4. 16 GB should be plenty for a single server right? I can always upgrade in the future if it becomes an issue. I plan on doing modpacks with sub 10 players. 5. I own multicraft licenses. Has anything much better come out?

specs fine but I personally would upgrade to 32gb ram so you have more for yourself and server ddr4 is very cheap now, no reason not to upgrade to 32gb as 16gb to me Is becoming more and more absolete

1. It is very powerful for server on plugins, but decent for server on mods 2. Indeed. Your processor have 4055 points on CPUMark (for great experience people recommend to have a CPU with 3k+ points on single thread) 3. Yes. I recommend you to use NVMe instead of SSD for even faster speeds! 4. Yes, but I still recommend you to buy 32 gigs 5. Ubuntu + Pufferpanel/Ptero should be better, but multicraft is easier

AH! Thats what I was using before! I had multicraft but switched to amp. Thanks for that! Ya Ill be using amp Ill double RAM to 32 GB since its cheap. I am filling mixed on the SSD stuff though. I already have a sata SSD which saves me money, and I don't imagine performance is much between that and NVME as far as a game server is concerned right?

Keep in mind, u don’t really need more than 16gb for the Minecraft server itself. You’ll only won’t the extra ram for overhead for the os, and any other applications/services Anything over 16gb can actually hurt ur server performance as Java has poor garbage collection the more ram u have

Oh ya Im familiar with that aspect, thank you! Whats your thoughts on buying an nvme when I have a sata ssd?

It’s definitely nicer. Higher storage speed is used for writing new data to ur device. Which for Minecraft servers is mostly used by generating newer chunks. If you pregen it world fully using chunky, you’re doing a majority of this writing before hand. It might take longer, but not too bad. If you have the money, sure go nvme. But if pregen and are looking to cut costs, using an ssd over sata isn’t gonna ruin any player experience (Highly recommended pregening ur world regardless of ur decision)

Ok thats good. I always try to pregen as even with a great CPU, with a bunch of people exploring at the start even a great pc is easily brought to its knees

Yup

So my first server I plan on starting is Better MC 1.19.2 Can I start a world client side, pre-gen it. Then use the same world file on a server, or are there differences that need to be accounted for?

Use chunky on ur server to pregen They have mod and plugin But no, no differences, u can use a client world on ur server. (But I’d still use chunky)

Ya it was crazy, my budget build of like i3-13100 $250 (SUPER budget MOBO) and for $100 more I get a really good MOBO and much better CPU. Its nuts haha
