looking for hosts, couple questions I couldnt find easy answers to yet.
Hi, I have been looking around for server hosts for a smaller server for me and friends. Feel like this is pretty common, but not asking for recs necessarily. The plan is to move it off realms right now since the world is large, want plugins, and dislike Microsoft. Within the next 6 months the plan is to build our own server hardware.
first question: I notice all the hosts use various panels, some of which are similar or seemingly built off the same software. Multicraft seems to be one. are the other "standard" panels? I assume using the more popular panels will make management troubleshooting easier for me to find resources for. second: one thing that I need in a server is full control over the branding. the potential to get a custom IP, change the icon, desc, etc... do most hosts do this? It is hard to tell. What keywords am I looking for? "dedicated IP included" I think just means it will stay static? third: I dont know how demanding a server is in terms of ram specifically. From what I have seen ~4gb is fine for one instance? I may want to run harder modpacks, and have ~10 ppl on consistently. Should I try for more ram to reduce lag/chunk loading/other significantly? Most recourses I have found say its "fine" but I would prefer to at performance at least slightly above a realms server. Will more ram be necessary? Thank you so much in advance 🙂 I assume these are common questions, but the research I found was confusing or from places hard to trust getting accurate info from.

not trying to be sold to, just general questions about what I am looking for with server hosting in general, myself or third party.
"looking for hosts" this was what i read mb
Multicraft is outdated and mostly dead, most host that uses it are hosts u dont want to use, Pterodactyl is the new standard that basically everyone uses, basically every host offers control over branding, Custom ip is either given for free with the hosting plan or is a added fee, and mostly means u have access to the 25565-19132 port, but for some host its the entire ip for yourself which means u can open as many ports and whatever port u want on that ip, for harder modpacks i'd recommend 6-8 for 10 people
got it with the panel. interesting. thank you ^^
with the ip, some mention it some dont at all. what am I looking for in order to have an ip that is more like "1234.net" completely custom wording? I dont know the benefits of opening as many ports as I want. I only plan on 1 server instance at a time.
do you know what in minecraft takes more ram? what in game am I augmenting with adding more?
more players and plugins/mods means you need more ram essentially
simply speaking
but there are much more variables
u would have to buy a domain from a registrar, there isnt a number/way to calculate ram amount u will specificly need

if you are self hosting, just set the port to 25565 for java and 19132 for bedrock, for other hosts which may not let you just have the 25565 port, you can set up an SRV record https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9765/2208/how-can-i-link-my-domain-name-to-a-minecraft-server/#:~:text=A%20service%20record%20(SRV%20record,The%20default%20port%20is%2025565.
i don’t think that tutorial is only for namecheap
selfhosting isnt recommended at all btw*
tbh a vps like oracle’s free plan is probably a lot better
haven’t tried it before though
u might run into performance issues with modpacks like rlcraft with 10 people
true
ok I understand the domain. Is there anything I need to look for with different hosts not letting me use it?
any host can use it
dedicated ip only really matters in the case of bedrock
so u can be fine without it
most hosts are better optimized for mc but for more advanced users i think a vps would be better
I havent looks at oracle yet at all.
why do you not recoomand self host? got it
why do you not recoomand self host? got it

Home hosting has its drawbacks / caveats
- Is your internet connection fast enough? In both directions (around 50M is usually enough; you should check here)? You don't connect the server to your router via WiFi, do you?
- Does your ISP provide a somewhat static, public, IPv4 address?
- Are you aware and able to deal with the security impliations?
- Is your computer powerful enough to run both a client and a server?
- Does any inhabitant (human or not!) mind the noise, heat and energy cost of a machine running 24/7?
- Alternatively, is your playerbase OK with the server not being there when you aren't?

+ ddos can be a issue if ur not doing friends only
selfhost is fine for friends only
if you trust them, that is
takes 1 mad person to ruin your internet
all of those drawbacks are fine with me. Already run a local server for the house personally. it will always be a whitelist server that vets the players. not too worried. but I can see the problem.
ok
um
hold on
I think thats it. thank you 🙂 there is so many of these hosts lol. thank you for the help ^^ ill close it in a sec, is there any pitfalls you think players usually run into trying to server host for beginners I should be aware of?
