Course,
(not sure what the corresponding forum channel is so here. Pardòn)
Hello all you discord bots masquerading as students. I have recently applied to this course, although I already work in the industry ( 3 years, Full stack). I am one of those career changers self taught guys, so looking into clearing out some comp sci basics.
What sort of technologies are being covered generally in the course ? ( I see C and C++ but I learnt never to trust what's written on college websites from my last degree)
Is it theoretically hefty or there are projects going making some real stuff ( I don't know using C or Cpp for graphics, games etc)
I think It will be great if these can be answered to start with.
Danke!!

CPA or CPP?
C, C++, SQL, javascript mainly, but you won't get into any real projects until pro options
also not a great program for covering compsci fundamentals
it's a programming diploma not a compsci degree, so no math and minimal theory
CPP
The course projects are mostly nonsense, you will need to come up with your own if you want something worth putting on a resume
very well, Thanks. This was an important one to know.
I'd say it won't have much value for you given that you're already working
If you want to learn compsci basics like you said check out https://www.computerenhance.com/p/welcome-to-the-performance-aware
Welcome to the Performance-Aware Programming Series!
Watch now (22 min) | A brief introduction explaining what "performance-aware programming" is, and what the course will be about.
Here you will learn how a processor actually works
oh yeah, and there's basically no focus on the hardware layer or optimization ^
Then find a good DSA course and you're basically a chad
Maybe learn some networking
The course projects stuff sounds the same everywhere. I went to a design college and even they had shitty ones. I was largely looking at this course to get some systems programming under the skills. I worked in europe and recently moved to canada and it seems like everyone is using ancient tech here, even in jobs makig it harder to find those kind of roles.
And you're better than 99% of programmers
yeah they teach basic C and C++ here, but very basic
you'd be fine self-teaching to reach the level you can get to in this program
I'd say the C++ is actually pretty thorough, they go into more detail than anywhere I've seen, but yeah self teaching will be your best bet imo
very valid, yeah more than most schools do
That is precisely why i applied here. All other places are teaching .net and java
nothing against them, but I could do it on my own
I'd say take the perf aware course I linked, it costs piss all, then find a systems level project idea and build it learning whatever you need as you go
they don't cover any networking (anymore) iirc
Yeah, this is valuable information guys
Yeah you will need youtube/udemy for networking
What year are you guys in ?
If you want a good project idea, write a good C++ code formatter which is better than clang-format (not hard to do). Then send me the link so I can use it 😆
I graduated a while ago
I would do it myself but it's a big time investment
Yeah 2 years indeed is
I think if i get a job here before sept, I certianly skipping it.
Else I could do even a year since it's pennines. But thanks for all of this info.
and then do all of the courses you listed while the course is going on
Yeah the tuition is pretty cheap if you get OSAP grants, so you can dropout without much consequence if you find work
I paid like 2K out of pocket for my whole education
Yeah, I don't care about the degree. I just need time.
college is mostly to buy time
All colleges teach nothing really.
Well seneca actually is better in many ways than other colleges/uni imo, it set me up pretty well
Very good if starting from nothing
Very cost and time effective
So I have heard since community colleges don't have a great name here. They admit any and every international student. I don't have anything against that but it's not great at times.
Yeah, I am eligible for OSAP so I think i might go for it unless someone gives me some sweet bucks.
What kind of setting are you working in ?
I work at RBC
doing backend sort of things
are you like writing cobolt ?
lol no but actually someone at work brought it up this week, I might look into it
Yeah pretty interesting. It's also interesting migrating these systems. Much better than npm install
which I am sure you know is half of the dev sector
javascript is literally making the world worse by the day
I know man, I don't even have a comp science backgorund, but I hate this level of abstraction
This is why I want to learn systems programming
You would enjoy the course I linked
You never know what's working and what's not
Just leave web dev behind
It's a collapsing civilization
could not agree more
There's a reason all the big companies are firing all the web devs
they are realizing you don't need 30k engineers to do a basic web app that can be done by like 15 ppl
Instagram services over a billion users and is maintained by like 5 dudes
Yup, This is why they are firing product mangers too. Hiring more devs, releasing buggy code at the code of MVP
lol
lol don't even get me started on agile coaches and scrum masters
hahaha
GIVE ME YOUR STORY POINTS BRO
I'm looking into my crystal ball and seeing your future:
performance aware programming course -> DSA course in C/C++ -> networking course (udemy/youtube) -> C++ code formatter project -> gigachad
lol awesome, Thanks for the advice. I think I have just subbed to the course..
I can give u a month free
if you haven't paid yet
not yet
ok dm me ur email
that will be giga chad of you
[email protected]

Sounds good.
@jayman42 do you know this individual?
@mcsevs21 Hey sorry mate, just opened discord after days, I am one those social media slow millennial. Well now i know him, help a mate out.
How dare you abandon me at my time of need
lol hey man, you could start by
What programming language you hate the most ? (you can say anything, but javascript is the right answer)
javascript is the right answeruhh 😅
I dont know man its hard to go against js 😔
ahh atleast you did not post React code.
Although I also mostly use js/ts but it irks me at times, atleast most of the frameworks.
@split
ahh atleast you did not post React code.😅
is it still available?
if it is then send it on [email protected]
