Upgrading to Dedi - Questions
Hi everyone, I'm looking to upgrade to a VPS using OVH from our EX Series server we're currently hosting on Apex Hosting, as we've outgrown that hardware (at least ram-wise, and they're trying to charge me 2x-3x more for 8-16 GB more RAM, so I'd rather switch to a VPS as I'm perfectly comfortable setting up and managing my own "bare metal").
As I stated previously, we're currently on an EX Series server with Apex, specs: Ryzen 9 5900X 4.8 GHz (US & EU) | 4 Dedicated vCores | NVMe SSDs | 16GB DDR4 RAM, and we're looking to upgrade to a VPS with OVH, specs: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X - 8c/16t - 3.8GHz/4.7GHz, 128GB DDR4 ECC 2666MHz, 2Γ 960GB SSD NVMe Soft RAID, 250Mbit/s network, unmetered (burst 1Gbit/s).
Some more context as to what we've got going and what we're experiencing with our current host:
We're running DJ2, with entirely pregenned dimensions all around so we aren't getting any worldgen lag, after running profiles it seems most of the lag is just coming from the sheer amount of chunks loaded/players ingame. We've got around 20-30 average players online at once and we're averaging between 10-15 TPS on a brand new server, so I'd expect little to no TPS lag on a fresh server due to nobody having any infrastructure, and I've heard that late-game DJ2 can get laggy even in smaller servers, which we are not.
Based on what I'm seeing from the limited information Apex shows me, we're averaging around 75-90% RAM usage and 3-6% CPU usage, so I think it's more RAM-related than CPU
Can anyone help me determine if the new specs will serve our needs properly and solve our issues? I'm not too familiar with what exactly Minecraft prefers in terms of RAM allocation (obviously there's diminishing returns based off JVM GC), processor configuration (if it prefers higher per-core performance or greater overall thread count), etc.
Thanks! π

The real question really is if you need that sort of dedicated machine for your server.
What sort of server you have, modded/spigot/paper and its forks
It's Forge, with Sponge
Also, where would you want your server to be?
It's currently in the eastern US (VA), but anywhere on the eastern side of North America would work
we have players from Europe so ideally somewhere in the VA/NY region (Quebec would be fine as well)
I'll be fully honest I don't have much experience with modded servers but that suprises me that you have that much ram usage
Could you try running a spark report?
spark
spark is a performance profiler for Minecraft clients, servers, and proxies.
Already have one from earlier
could you try another report an updated version from here https://spark.lucko.me/download

the sponge version should work for you
I downloaded the latest forge version for 1.12 this morning, it should be as up-to-date as it comes
sparks complaining so im assuming its a 1.12 thing
Probably
the sponge plugin version should work for you though
^^
its more uptodate
Sure, let me run a new profile
After restarting we lost some players so we're running at a full 20 TPS right now, we usually are around 20-40 players at night so I'll check back in later once it's more active with an updated profile
seems legit
it also doesn't seem like the sponge version is working. Sponge is registering it as a plugin but the commands aren't showing up
Here's an updated one with a bit more players on, still on the older version of spark, unfortunately, since the sponge one didn't want to work https://spark.lucko.me/NRCn3Wqttu

average tps during this profile was ~15 with 15 players online
I just realized I was actually wrong in my original assessment of what Iβm getting from OVH, itβs a full dedicated box and not a VPS
How much would you be paying for it?
about $107/mo, which is roughly $40 more than we're currently paying
