PC Stuck on Bios Splash after Windows Update
I was prompted for a windows update at shutdown earlier, so I ran it. About an hour later, I turned on my pc again, and it didn’t boot to windows. In fact, it hung on the bios splash and didn’t even let me enter it via keyboard command. Eventually, 3-5m after power on button press, it resorted to the bios and I noticed that the nvme windows partition isn’t even detected. With relevant subreddits down it is even harder to find any relevant support articles.
I’m unsure at this stage what to do.

I have to check. I just placed an Amazon order for a usb 3 nvme enclosure. But I’m guessing that no matter what, I’m going to have to reinstall Windows and redo all my shit.

At this point I can’t even reliably boot to bios. It keeps hanging.

I’ve never used parted magic, though I’ve heard of it. I’ll check it out.

Ugh. Gotta dig the damn thing out from beneath the motherboard and fiddle with the damn screw. If it comes to reinstalling, I may just put the OS onto a sata ssd. At least that’s easier to trouble shoot if windows is going to be less stable.

Desktop. This gigabyte z590 mobo had a poor m2 slot screw design. Seems that newer ones are easier to use.

Oh. I totally forgot about that. … I think it’s two LEDs lamps, but not a nice display with a number code.

I will have to check when I get home 😅
I pulled all the drives from the computer, including the nvme’s, and the computer reached bios without a hitch. So I think my theory is on the right track. Something happened during the windows update that corrupted the boot capability of the operating system. Idk if this is in the uefi, or something else.
I should receive the nvme-usb3 enclosure tomorrow. I guess I will connect it to another pc and conduct a backup, if possible.
But I am curious if there is anything I can do to attempt to repair the existing OS drive.
I have an old image of the drive from the time I installed it with a fresh copy of windows 11. I could try copying the uefi partition over? I could also try using the windows 11 install usb to see if any rollback utility works?
Booting back to the OS would help me get some program configs and databases off that I was testing.
But the bigger question is, at the end of all this, if I should reinstall Win 11 to the/an nvme, or if I should go back to a sata ssd for the OS.

That’s what I thought, though I have never used it.

I’ll add that to my notes right now for tomorrow.
There is one other thing that could contribute to this, though I really don’t think it should have…
When I installed the nvme with windows 11, I left my windows 10 sata ssd attached. During my first win 11 install attempt, it installed without a uefi on the nvme and relied on the sata. It presented a windows boot selection screen. When I detached the win 10 sata, it lagged out the bios screen just like this time.
I pulled the w10 drive and conducted the install of win 11 to the nvme again.
But, this entire time, the w10 drive has remained attached. I was slowly pulling files off in my free time. Technically it is still bootable.
Idk. I’m not that bright with this stuff… could the windows 11 update have… idk… done something like that original install when it screwed up the boot-ability of the nvme?

I want to stick with the nvme as the boot.. but I’m rattled now.

Well, thank you for listing to my wild tale. I will remember to check the smart status of it tomorrow.

It appears that there is no file system on the nvme drive. Whatever happened, it removed the file table.

Yes, I tested it with another nvme drive that worked fine.

In this case, I haven’t backed up the c drive for several months
Oh well. No use in fretting,

It’s also extremely hot for not doing anything… the nvme d drive is warm-ish, but cool.

Nope
What I mean to say is that the d-drive in this same enclosure is cool

I guess it’s just a coincidence that it happened during the windows update at night

Yep
During desktop operation and in this external usb enclosure
Oh well. Thank you for helping me to understand some troubleshooting steps. I’ll have to plan better. I used to do frequent backups during windows 10. I got careless
So. I believe I am within the RMA window for this drive. I paid $120 at the time of sale. But, if I’m mailing this back to the manufacturer in China…. I mean, the drive is unusable now, but I have no way of being sure someone isn’t going to attempt to open this, or even dispose of it in a destructive manner?
