What Licence is appropriate for systems?

As the title suggests, I have found a system that is not available on Foundry, and would love to challenge myself to make. Looking at GitHub, it offers a few different licences, but I am not sure what is the right/most applicable one

Open Source licences govern how other people are able to use your work, especially regarding reproduction and modification. Here's a short explanation of some common ones: https://choosealicense.com/licenses

Yeah I am looking at them but just not sure what one is the best one to use for me...

If the system has an author, you should probably get in touch with them to discuss that. If they allow you to sub-licence the IP, their input would be invaluable. Obligatory IANAL, ask your legal representative.

Yeah already reached out to them. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what they say, in the meantime, I can use the system as a practice anyway, even if it goes nowhere, but we'll see πŸ™‚ also, IANAL?

MIT and GPL are common for the source code. Art assets, rules, etc. go by different licensing usually.

On that note, creating a system that doesn't use any paid for content such as rules/artwork etc. that's not a breach of copyright if it's made for public distribution? Like if I created the system that had a basic character sheet that had the values for the system, when you click attribute, applicable dice is rolled, but that's it, is fine for distribution right? Or would it still be possibly a breach and I need permission from the original IP authors?

You'll still want to declare explicit license for the rules and assets.

Also, a lot of simple rules can't be copyrighted, trademarked, or anything, so if you have only the functionality, then you don't really need much. If you include "lore" however, which includes non-mechanical descriptions of abilities and such, you do kinda start needing something. For example AD&D can be implemented in Foundry with no issues, if your system only includes the mechanical side of it, with no real content to go with it, despite the licensing of that system not being conductive for it otherwise. Your system would be heavily dependant on custom content or people referring to external material in that case, however. But it would not affect your licensing.

Nothing kinky, just short for "I Am Not A Lawyer".
