Bed level issues for over 9 months now.

Hi all! I am hoping that some of you will be brave enough to tough it out on this thread and help me get this sorted once and for all. It has been close to 9 months now and I have yet to produce good and stable prints with the RatRig. This is the problem: https://youtu.be/u4j3mgMFuv0 Bed level issues. As you can see, I am printing a 100x100x0.2 swatch of PCTG. I must preface this by establishing 3 things: first, that this happens no matter what filament; and second, that this happens on glass bed, the PEI sheet that came with the printer and we even tried (out of desperation) printing directly onto the magnetic base once, just to see what would happen. Third, I have tried with 0.4 and 0.6mm nozzles and despite the possible layer heights, the results are the same. Also, I have tried with the current probe and a PINDA. To start, we have set the nozzle distance. We have also run bed leveling countless times. We can see that the bed is leveling and compensating for tilt. The results seem to be consistent and repeatable to a degree. I won't say the results are stellar, but according to some, the results should be good enough that I shouldn't have any issues. Any print is always preceded by a bed level run, either with the standard 7x7 full plate grid, or since a few months ago, using PAM from one of our very own (see more here: https://github.com/HelgeKeck/pam). We have loosened and tightened the X rail as per many suggestions. I have made sure the head is not wobbling. Basically, we have covered the usual suspects. After the measures and some fidgeting, we got some good results as seen in the RatOS profile (see attached). However, even with those results, things still stink. Over time, the results tend to degrade and I end up doing it all again. Right now, my level is off by a range of 0.3 to 0.4 mm which is way too much. Second image attached. (continued in the first reply since I am running out of characters for the OP).

Despite my best efforts, on both glass and PEI, I have this same issue. Depending on how big the print swatch is, the layer height and therefore adhesion vary. The strange thing is it varies along the diagonal front right to back left direction. In the current same, the print starts off a bit too high on the front right, before becoming too high...

The very odd thing is that no matter what, the printer always seems to have the same behavior: if I set the layer height correctly by babystepping as the print starts at the front right corner, over the course of the first layer print, it goes from good, to too high, to too squished. Always. So I am wondering if anyone has any idea what could be wrong? I have gotten used to just having to baby the printer all the time, but it is now getting t a point where it is annoying. For smaller prints, it is fine as I usually check if the print starts off ok. But for larger prints, it sucks having to watch the printer for 45 or even more minutes while the base is printing. I am open to suggestions. I will even consider swapping beds, using a different bed level probe... whatever!

try it with the enclosure open remove the top and the door wait until the printer has cooled down and try it just to rule something out

We have tried this already a couple of times. Doesn't seem to change anything.

try this and see what happens [bed_mesh] mesh_pps: 7,7

using your PAM. Is that still valid even so?
Helge Keck

PAM is unrelated to this

Should I delete this and paste that into the cfg somewhere above?

no never touch the green text at the end of the config file

put the snippet i shared in the user overrides section

So just paste above in the overrides and send a new print? Ok Restarting. Another bed level, I suppose?

alwys in front of a new print, ALWAYS

You mean a bed level run? Yeah... It runs using your PAM. I am running a new height map now. After the addition and a restart, that is.

the heightmap wont change the print will maybe thats what i want to find out

NMGMarquesOP2y ago
Oh, ok.... Got that wrong, then. I'll send a new print.

Some improvement. However, still the same behavior.

I didn't touch the height during print.

now pirnt the smae thing but move it 5cm to any other side
NMGMarques
NMGMarquesOP2y ago
Ok. Is it OK if I print 2, one to the left and one to the right?

sure just want to see if this pattern repeats on another lcoation

It started by printing the left one first. Same sort of behavior. It is 55mm to the left from the center of the plate. And the one on the right is 55mm in opposite direction. The one on the right seems pretty good.

If I place it on my tablet screen, you can see the light bleeding through on the two parts.

Helge Keck2y ago
well, doesnt seem to be a probe error or similar not sure if i can help you any further but judging from your bed mesh image you have some alignment issues
NMGMarques
NMGMarquesOP2y ago
Yes. I assumed as much. The problem is despite all we have tried in the past we can't seem to settle on where it is coming from.

you can try this take the y extrusions out and try to find the straightes face use this face for the rail extrusions are not very precise, sometimes one side is better than another
NMGMarques
NMGMarquesOP2y ago
You mean the rails? Take them out and swap the X with one of the Y?
Helge Keck
Helge Keck2y ago
no do not swap the rails try to find the best side of the extrusion, with the light test use this side to mount the rails on
NMGMarques
NMGMarquesOP2y ago
Ahhh, ok. So try and print on the better side of the plate. The side with the better result. Yeah, I can give that a go.
