How do I use regular Fabric Mods?
TL;DR: I haven't played MC since 1.8, and knew modding at that time but don't know Modding things now. Iris works fine and so do shaders but I don't know how to install regular Mods and searches on Google just tell how to install Iris alone, or Mods alone. Not both.
Longer version:
I do have to mention, I haven't played Minecraft since 1.8. It's been a very long time and I haven't kept up to date with stuff at all. I just got the game yesterday, and am very confused at all the new stuff like Fabric.
I installed all the necessary Java downloads, and followed a tutorial for installing Iris. I chose Iris install, and it works great. The shaders work completely fine, and it looks wonderful. There is nothing wrong with this, and I've loved the experience and the program. The only thing I want to do now, is install a couple of other mods which aren't shaders. For now, one which would allow Controller Support in Java. But watching tutorials and reading documentation for that says I need either Forge or Fabric to install it. But Iris is a separate option in the Launcher from Forge and Fabric. So after some trial and error and crashes and frustration I'm just asking the proper method here. How do I install regular mods to Iris?

oh now i get what you want
you need a fabric install option, it will put iris on the .minecraft/mods folder instead, and you can add more there
for mods, i assume you use 1.19.4 right?
for downloading mods i highly reccomend https://modrinth.com/
recommend setting those filters for easier mod finding
ahhh i see
so i was supposed to get Fabric first
yes, iris installer has the "fabric install" option
i hope this isn't a service that needs a sign-up?
no need
No
Free
fantastic, ill get it
It's just a website it isn't anything you download or "get"
oh....i got too used to launchers
tried Fabric, Forge, and GDLauncher too
alright well ill bookmark it then
yep that's installed
aight so you can use those filters i mentioned
categories are up to you
so what i have to do now is just,
-uninstall the current Iris Install,
-get Fabric
-install Fabric API to make sure mods are compatible
-install Iris as a regular mod to Fabric
-install whatever other mod I want as a Fabric mod
right?
you dont have to uninstall iris install
to get fabric, the iris installer itself has the button for fabric install
it was blurred out for me
i think because i already didn't have fabric
so ill try that this time
hm thats weird then
it was a pure vanilla install, i didnt have fabric
so thats why it wasn't an option
i dont really use an official launcher (I use prism launcher) but to me it shouldnt really blur out the option even if you dont have fabric isntalled :Thonk:
but yeah do the rest of the steps
get fabric first
i recommend installing iris and sodium mod together because iris is dependent on sodium
if there isn't a mods folder in my minecraft directory should i just make it
yes
though after the first launch with fabric it should create it itself
but either way it can save time by creating it yourself
no longer blurred out
yay
oh there we go
anyways ill write the list so you and me dont get lost in steps
- Fabric
- Iris & Sodium mod
- Fabric API
- (Optional but recommended) Mod Menu (This is for mod configuration)
- (The rest is the mods you want to download)
here's what the folder looks like
correct, one thing though
midnightcontrols is for controller support
sometimes some mods require dependencies
you can find them here
without those additional dependency the mod wont work
i didnt notice
thanks for telling, ill get it
when launching MC it will tell you what mod you are missing anyways during startup
but i usually always check the mod page before anything else
IT WORKS
@AndyWithCatz thank you so much for your help
no problem

also consider Controlify, MidnightControls is a pretty old mod. Controlify was written from scratch
https://modrinth.com/mod/controlify
i tried it and.....it just caused the game to crash
though i would've loved if it worked. it says it supports vibrations
Can you send a crash report?
The game crashed whilst unexpected error
Error: java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "String.equals(Object)" because the return value of "dev.isxander.controlify.config.ControlifyConfig.currentControllerUid()" is null
Full report, can be found in the Minecraft directory. Latest.log would be great too
Did you remove the Midnight Controls mod?
Also, Controlify needs to have the YACL (Yet Another Config Lib) mod in order to work: https://modrinth.com/mod/yacl (Yes, it isn't specified on the Controlify page... isxander should really fix that).
Ah dang I fell asleep
Yeah I used the config library and also removed the midnight controls mod. It booted up fine but on first boot it asked if I wanted to download something super small for vibration support. I pressed yes, and it crashed and repeated that crash until I removed it
Then I put midnight controls back there and played a couple hours without issued
honestly
all the "iris installer" does is make a fabric instance and put a copy of Iris and Sodium in it
I dont think theres much of a reason to use it over the fabric installer
especially if you use Prism Launcher or some other actually good launcher
If you use “Fabric Install” yes
that is correct
Iris Install has some specialized modifications
well again i haven't touched minecraft in years so before now i didnt even know what Fabric was.
but speaking of launchers i just use the default one, is there a benefit to using some other launchers? if so then what would you recommend
the main reason i recommend Prism launcher to people getting in to minecraft is because it has this screen
simply pick the version and pick the modloader you want
no need to mess with any "installer" programs
Same with Multi-MC (Prism is a Fork of Multi-MC with updated GUI Graphics).
