Looking for a sense of direction

Rn I feel that time is going by and I'm not making any progress towards any clothing that I want to aim for; I'm new to fashion haven't really needed to wear many clothes other than uniforms/sports, but now I do so thats why im here. At my uni i feel every guy is just wearing roughly the same thing; baggy jeans, or jorts, plus a much more fitted top. imo i dont think i would go for that type of style, want smth more minimal and clean. ig I'm looking for a way to be different (not stick out like a sore thumb) but still keep it simple and minimal. Also having the ability with my wardrobe to not have tons of clothes, as i hate just piling up stuff that i might not end up wearing at all. Idk about inspiration, cos ig thats where one would start; looking at basketball players (i play sport if you couldnt tell) like steph curry. Most of his outfits are simple and clean and thats sort of what im after, but go for a darker or beige colour palette instead of some of the plain whites he wears. (look ik hes curry and im just some random guy and that plays a part in why he "looks decent" imo). Also i dont necessarily like bulkier leather shoes, they just seem uncomfortable to me; plus you gotta break em in and its just a hassle that i dont wanna go down.

it feels like im trynna combine or have 2 diff styles, like one has more hoodies/sweatshirts which can still go with pants/trousers but then also having some more cleaner almost "sophisticated" looks also no offense to ppl in this server but i feel a lot of ppl's style in here is nearly the same but idk

i’ve turned up to lectures in 70s bootcut jeans, cowboy boots and a hat. it’s more than doable - just a confidence thing i see no reason why you couldn’t

There is definitely a pretty common thread through most of the regular posters. A lot of us broke off from the same community. From the looks you've picked out I think you're looking for a work wear adjacent look
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
is that necessarily a bad thing?

No

aus tralia tbh rn the biggest thing holding me back is probably shoes, i dont have anything other than "running", dw they arent the ones with a whole lump of foam at the bottom, shoes or shoes i play basketball in. ofc the lack of clothes too but i reckon shoes should be a "first thing to buy" ig on my list cos i still have some clothes surprise surprise some of my stuff is from uniqlo... could you elaborate on work wear adjacent? another question if you wore a hoodie (w/o the graphic) like this with slimmer pants then some other shoes at the bottom (maybe some type of slim shoe idk) would that still work? then the same hoodie could work on top of different pants/trousers and same for the pants they could work elsewhere

also there's smth in me wanting to wear stuff like this as well, but maybe a bit more offwhite or beige or even darker rather than almost straight white

idk if this helps but i hoop/gym a fair bit but i dont think its a great idea to try and incorporate that into what you wear on the daily, you could with slight touches/details but i dont think one should ig only thing is, is that if im wearing smth to uni i might have to go gym/basketball afterwards so ig thats smth to consider
raisinpie
raisinpie2w ago
The non leather shoes on the fits you posted are from new balance and salomon You've got it right, it's hard to make gym clothes look good outside of the gym. I climb, and the clothes I wear for that are so ugly I just roll with it
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
yeah but i can always change, like wear shorts underneath and then change my top, its usally what i do and afterwards, dry up sweat and put my other clothes back on just rolling wiht the clothes you play in (usually shorts + shirt/singlet) is fine but most of the time (cos cold) i would have a hoodie/sweatshirt + pants over top or smth to protect against cold mhm, i think i would prefer the new balances but even those at times look a bit bulky, nb 574s are nice would there be any alternatives to nb 574s?

stuff you would imagine laborers to wear - jeans that aren't too loose or wide, carpenter pants, denim jackets, hoodies, etc. brands like dickies and carhartt and levi's
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
I see, what material of pants doesn't scratch up and wrinkle tho?
zeometer
zeometer2w ago
mostly synthetics or else heavy duty duck cotton
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
yeah ig so, maybe not everything but defo done things align. I'm guessing it's alright to not follow one fixed "style" per say duck cotton sounds expensive.... maybe a blend of cotton + smth else
zeometer
zeometer2w ago
exactly; you may like multiple things and the combination of them is what forms your style
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
ig so cos I like those things but then I also like the more sophisticated extremely minimal looks would sweatpants (sort of ctivewear) still fall under workwear? Or nah but honestly I would prefer a different material to denim for pants, but I should defo get a pair and see, can't know if you haven't tried
zeometer
zeometer2w ago
honestly trying stuff out is the most helpful thing

might i suggest duck canvas and similar? dickies, carhartt both do plenty of canvas pants
zeometer
zeometer2w ago
that and embracing the fact that you're probably not going to find the single nice neat perfect answer that combines all of your influences AND is inexpensive AND is hard wearing
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
what is "duck canvas" like make out of duck?
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain2w ago
Yeah
lyon
lyon2w ago
i think it refers to either a specific color of canvas or weight i haven’t figured it out yet but it’s a common identifier on their canvas garments
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
aight I'll check em out, if they have them in a straight or tapered fit I would like them
lyon
lyon2w ago
it holds up well, ages beautifully, and always looks nice in a healthy splatter of paint, should you have those kinds of hobbies
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
ah yeah, not me, maybe one day who knows

that’s the fun thing about workwear pants is you don’t have to worry a ton about how they fall apart. as long as it isn’t structural it looks fantastic
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
any shoe recs tho? I kinda wanna start there unless I shouldn't

Unfortunately the origin of duck canvas has nothing to do with ducks "This weave is both easy to construct and strong, especially when made with heavyweight threads. The term “duck” is the English derivation of the Dutch word doek, which originally meant linen canvas"
Walmart the Conqueror
They call it duck canvas because ducks wear it I've got a pair of duck canvas pants that I like, I'd also recommend you try a pair of them out
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
I like linen loose pants but for summer ofc, rn winters approaching
zeometer

big corduroy or big sweatpants can give a similar vibe - because they're heavier though you'll probably want a wider leg to get the same draping effect

it might help to settle on one primary "thing" to target at first, whether its the workwear adjacent vibes or more minimal matching sets there's a decent argument for finding different shoes or different pants first, because usually one will lead into the other. might be worth looking at salomon xt-6s or adidas gats for shoes and seeing how you feel
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
minimal matching would be more closer to an almost "old money" style but not quite. And workwear was explained above. I reckon workwear adjacent + some more hoodie/sweatpants type stuff might work I would like smth like those Adidas over the xt6s, also a safer buy imo

just as a general tip wrt sweatpants, for the styles you've mentioned, don't even consider smth like a nike tech fleece sweatpant. A slim or tapered sweatpant gives off a totally different vibe (and not the one youre looking for based on your inspo) than something more substantial & wide.
Masaters
MasatersOP2w ago
defo not a tech fleece, was thinkig smth on the looser baggier but thicker end, so it almost drapes ig, which I could still easily wear b4 my games/trainings what pants would these be? they don't look like sweatpants but I reckon you could get smth close with looser sweatpants ----- Cos I've got two and maybe 2.5 styles in mind that I wanna try and wear, I like them both. But only way to really explore is actually buy stuff now but slowly tho.
Walmart the Conqueror
Highly recommend going to stores and just trying stuff on
