GPU limiting itself to 65-80W sometimes

AMD RX6750XT My GPU sometimes (without really having a clear when or why) uses only about 65W max in Games. Rebooting sometimes fixes it and sometimes doesnt. What I've done so far: Set Power limit in LACT to highest possible (230W) Try out all different Power Levels, 3D_FULL_SCREEN, Compute and so on reset my undervolt to factory I also found some stuff online about CPU bottleneck. No idea, my CPU runs at 50C and around 30% usage in Marvel Rivals for example (where I get 80W GPU usage). I wasn't having these issues on Windows, so I think it's decently safe to assume that's not the problem at hand, but I might be wrong. I'm getting the usage, watt and temperatures from flatpak MangoHud.

rebooted, works for now in Marvel Rivals. may be something about Minecraft/Prism Launcher/my modpacks that causes this.

Are the fans working maybe the gpu is throttling trying to protect itself from overheating.

According to MangoHud and Mission Center, temps are fine. Now, the sensor may be broken, but it worked fine after reboot, with the fans being rather hearable. If they weren't working, my GPU should have been destroyed by that, no? ok so now it's actually pulling a bit more still, it never really maxes out, if I increase render distance it Minecraft for example it often prefers less fps over more watt with shaders however it's willing to try harder So this seems to be more of a Minecraft issue, but I still can't wrap my head around why it happened in MR too because I haven't checked today, but yesterday it ran fine after reboot, GPU even hit temps like 67C

ok are the frames droping when its limited to 65w? There is always a possibility that the info you get is wrong and i think there is the possibility that the behavior is intended. the drivers and firmware of the gpu are not realy working different than under windows, you just have not that much control, the drivers from amd are very good integrated into the kernel itself

yup.

true, but at least the general idle and load temps are that which I know from Windows.

I don't remember having these issues on Windows though. If all else fails, I guess I'll have to either reinstall Windows and test if it's working alright there, or just give up. roberto_guccimane is having the same Issue as I am, with a very similar card (6700XT) for simpler reading, i‘ll redirect the rest here too. exact same kind of issue I‘m having. My GPU also on a really not in any way understandable basis sometimes decides to just not try. On my side, I‘ve given it permission and used it to undervolt (reverting that to default didn‘t help). Does seem like this is an issue with LACT.
roberto_guccimane
thanks for consolidating the info so far in here if we have almost the same model and the same issue that would strongly suggest the hardware itself is fine, at least

thinking the exact same Also said this before but worked fine on Windows and EndeavourOS
roberto_guccimane
yeah it also used to work just fine under bazzite for me, just like a month ago perhaps more this started happening

this very roughly lines up with v.0.7.2 (released on 16th of May) or v0.7.1 on the 27th of february, that‘s closer Update: resetting all configuration, then rebooting, has for now fixed the issue for me. @roberto_guccimane, would you try too?

Okay I messed around with it some more and I figured out that no matter what I apply in lact, it just totally breaks power management, no matter what I set them to.

Incredibly drunk power behavior with a 7900 XTX. NOT the other powe...
This is really difficult to explain so I made a video showing it. Please watch: https://youtu.be/ceHsFTM35nE tl;dw: The power consumption appears to be offset 50w below the power limit for no disce...

I'll enjoy my actually working GPU some more and then I'll try if it is the same for me.
roberto_guccimane
hnnng that sounds great, ill try around to see if i can get it fixed as well. alright so i tried the steps used in the git issue, resetting every possible thing in lact to default but so far no difference maybe i really need to wipe and reinstall my system and then never touch lact ever

just to be absolutely sure, you reset configuration from the hamburger menu and then rebooted, right?
roberto_guccimane
yup, even did it for each of the different config tabs

darn
roberto_guccimane
yeah... my next idea is to remove lact completely and any possible onfig files, then reboot once more
Mandarinoo
MandarinooOP2w ago
i know this is stupid but can you try for one last time? just reset configuration, nothing else, then close app and reboot
roberto_guccimane
and if that fails too i might have to reinstall the system will do

MandarinooOP2w ago
who knows maybe resetting config one by one changes things I also have been having issues again sometimes, but only after I undervolted again …I think
roberto_guccimane
tried as you suggested, doing exactly those steps to no avail i think i might need to reinstall

yeah I really don’t get it either Maybe make an issue on the LACT git It seems doing literally anything in LACT causes this issue. If I undervolt while a game is running, it still works fine and I can even see the benefits in real-time. But after that it at some point decides my free trial of full GPU usage has ended. jesus fucking christ what does my system expect from me at this point? Shit's not working again and this time I have absolutely zero ideas what it could be performance in Marvel Rivals is still ok at least. I'll look into if it uses Vulkan or something else, might be helpful in determing the issue considering it runs well when Minecraft doesn't. I'll also try Minecraft with Regular OpenGL, been using Zink to have MangoHud actually work until now. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn‘t. I can‘t identify any logic. But, one factor I haven‘t considered is my CPU It‘s currently on PBO -30 So I‘ll try changing that and see if that does something

that is a very hard setting i guess

it is, but at the same time Marvel Rivals runs just fine I could download MHW too to test also trying Minecraft without optimization mods rn

by the way LACT has a Flatpak now online on flathub! you can download it per discover

I‘ll wait for that to be the way Bazzite does it

not sure if i understand you corectly or if you understand me: lact is in the bazzite software app available now. before we needed to layer it ontop with ostree right?!

yup
roberto_guccimane
i just bit the bullet and wiped my system, that seems to have done the trick. no more "low power" reports coming from the gpu and fps is back to normal, at least in wow (gotta download other games first but that takes a bit) i also absolutely made sure lact wont even be installed during setup lol my gpu is decent enough and my games not that graphics intense for the most part that i can do fine with stock performance

MandarinooOP4d ago
oof yeah it‘s probably that which solved the problem I‘ll try deinstalling LACT first though
roberto_guccimane
Good luck, I tried that too but it didnt help unfortunately. But iirc in the git issue it did so maybe you get it right 🤞

speaking of, did you make one?
roberto_guccimane
I haven't yet, I don't have an account and was kinda too lazy to do it, at that point I had already resigned to the system wipe But if you have one I'm sure our findings would be appreciated
