What chain should I get?

I want to get a silver chain(nothing to fancy) but I'm broke so whats a good chain I could get for roughly $50? Give me links/places to find a chain and/or any other tips or advice

I have a friend who sources a whole business reselling vintage jewelery and sources 100% from pawn shops and other vintage store. Couldnt hurt to check some cases if you find yourself near anything like that https://www.etsy.com/search?q=925+sterling+silver+chain&ref=search_bar&order=highest_reviews

Also for new chains the cheaper it is the smaller it will be in diameter and obviously less material will be used. So really cheap chain might be thinner than you are thinking

When buying second hand how do I know the quality is fine for me to wear? Also is it weird to wear a stainless steel chain? Like do many people do it?

Nothing weird about it. Stainless Steel is the most popular material for watch bracelets, for reference.

most people aren't going to tell the difference between stainless, titanium, silver etc at a glance

Especially if it isn't very polished. Patina-ed silver looks a lot more grey like steel
