Steam Compatibility Tool Failed Error when starting Any Steam Game
I'm running into an issue where any official Steam game yields An error occurred while launching this game: Compatibility Tool Failed, this started happening a few days ago and still not able to get any games working in Game Mode or Desktop mode 😦 Non-steam games work as expected
I've tried:
-
ujust fix-reset-steam
-deleting all compat data folder in steam directory
-uninstalling each proton entry on steam > tools and reinstalling them manually
-validating files on each proton entry on steam
-trying several ProtonGE compatibility yields same error
-ujust update in case i was missing something
Is there anything else I can try? Or what else can I do to check my compatibility tool status or repair it? Many thanks for any suggestions

Do you have the steam linux runtimes installed?
hi, thanks for pointing this out. after checking, turns out these only say "install" with it greyed out. I'm giving file validation a try on them now
when you verify a game, it should also verify the used proton and runtime and download the missing ones
that’s what I thought too, but it happens in several titles, despite verifying each of them I’m afraid. I verified the linux runtimes but it said 0 files verified
I’m wondering if I should rollback to an older image? Not sure if that would restore them
that's weird. You could try to repair your library in the storage tab.

can you do something through the cog instead of the install buuton?
sadly not. not sure why it says available for steam right now either. this is so weird
repair finishes, but super quickly with no effect

ujust fix-reset-steam and have another look at the runtimes. I was not looking at those before, but i see even that is having some issuesGood luck. All I can think of I'd try if that doesn't work, is deleting them manually, verify a game and hope for the best
launched steam through terminal and tried launching a game with the error, this was the output
tried rebasing to bazzite stable, rpm-ostree reset, rebasing back to deck, and deleting them manually before verifying several games. can't get these runtimes to redownload at all. many thanks for your response, giving up on this for now. was working perfectly fine a few days ago, no idea how this even broke in the first place\
