Layering ideas for this bright PRL shirt

I have this shirt that I quite like but I've never really worked out a way to wear it other than by itself (I mean with trousers obviously ...) It's a great shirt to wear with jeans or light coloured trousers on a sunny day but it seems hard to get it into more advanced fits, for example as a mid layer. Of course it is a very preppy/ivy type of item and I usually don't try to style my outfits in that direction. The only jacket/sport coat that this really works with (for me) is a blue blazer and that combo is a bit to full-on preppy for me. I've tried tweed coats/ cord overshirts/ suede bombers (and several more) and none of them seem to work for me. The shirt looks too vibrant and perhaps even "dressy" for those slouchy materials. I'd be interested if people have seen pictures of this kind of combo working though.
It seems like the sort of item you should be able to throw into other genres of fit to achieve a preppy/ ivy "splash" but I can't get that to work.

I don't think I entirely get the vibe you're going for, but I'll try anyway: One thing that I think doesn't quite work about the outfit in the picture is the colours. The colour combination doesn't seem to work to me. I guess the pants could maybe work with the shirt, but I still don't think they're the kind of colour combination I would go with or would know how to style well. I think the jacket colour just doesn't really mesh well with the shirt. Have you thought about maybe a dark blue? Emerald green? Jewel tones? Maybe something like that? I think it might also work with a pair of dark-ish blue jeans, for example? I can't really put my finger on what exactly about the colours here doesn't quite work for me, I'm not an expert, they just don't seem to mesh well. Also, have you maybe considered a vest/waistcoat? Whether you go with a fancy silky one or rather a less shiny more casual one from a rougher kind of fabric could probably make a big difference. I don't know if that is really the vibe you want, but it's what came to mind for me. Hope it maybe helped a bit 💁

I had a gold ocbd and imo tonal fits seemed to work the best with it

i'm also trying to figure out the intent here...if it's to have a mostly workwear style with a "splash" of ivy then i think the bright color makes it too distinct for this goal (also i think the outfit reads as generally ivy minus the fatigues to begin with) imo a more structured jacket (brown leather, maybe a trucker) or a darker outer layer with more obvious textures (checked sportcoat, sweater or cardigan with flecks of other colors, a barn coat, maybe a chamois shirt) would pair well here

It's a cool shirt. It will almost always be the centerpiece of a fit because of the color, and that's fine! That being said, the cardigan and undershirt have no color and don't play well with it. Something with more weight would work better, either literally or in terms of color/patterns. Zeo's suggestions are good - tweed would also play well here.

I'm not sure this color advice is helpful since you yourself don't seem sure about it. Vests are a good idea, but that may make things even harder, since trying to cover up a color this bright may make it even more jarring.

Tried a trucker - not sure this works because of colour issues!

Dark blue and emerald green coming right up! From a colour and texture point of view alone, I actually really like the way the orange looks against both of these materials, regardless of any issues with the actual styling!

First two are really good, that suit rocks! I think the third one would work better with pants with more color. The 4th one the jeans and chore separately work well, but I feel like they match each other too closely.

suit fit is great i see the color issue with the trucker but i wonder how much of it is the indoor lighting (vs this taken outdoors) with the last two fits i think swapping the pants in each may help (eta or wearing the fatigues in 4)

Haha I love this. If it feels like your style then that's great! If not then the other fits you posted are solid too
