Fake 925 silver?

Hi! I got this cool solid silver belt, or so it seemed. It has a « Mexico 925 » stamp on it which should mean sterling silver. From the vinted seller, supposed to be from the 80s. Looked to be someone selling mom’s old stuff I’ve seen plenty of fake aliexpress stamped 925 on Vinted being passed as real but this was clearly an old item She wasn’t sure herself if it was actually silver,it was cheap and looked legit so I took the risk I wanted to clean it with the foil+baking soda method which I had successfully used for necklaces before, rusty orange spots appeared on it instantly Scrubbed it off and it’s fine now but yeah I’ve never seen silver do that Also, the sides of each piece are dull and dark It doesn’t smell metallic, is a reasonable weight and sure looks like silver to my inexperienced eye though Still, it’s all leading me to believe it’s plated at best but I was curious to see what y’all would say Thanks 😄

It’s a very thin belt but still weighs quite a bit, the chances it’d be silver for what I paid were slim

If you had an entire belt made of solid 925 silver it would be very expensive even vintage Silver tarnishes, explaining the dark spots on the sides The first picture looks almost like silver plated brass, but that could just be a reflection

Yeah from first pic it’s just a reflection Looks evenly silver That’s what I’m thinking too Was thrown off by the stamp

I mean first thing if it’s magnetic its not silver, there are also ways to spot test tarnishing tho that still could be plated in silver

Tbh past that is something id rather have a jeweler do, to be sure would probably be an acid test but I wouldn’t be trying that at home

Put a drop of bleach on it. If it's silver it will turn black (and then you can just clean the tarnishing off).

Gotcha But wouldn’t it react the same if it’s plated silver

if you feel okay dunking it in water, you can do a density test of a link to see if it's plated or an alloy

Yeah, plated stuff will react the same. Finding out whether it's solid Vs plated is a job for a jeweller.

My kitchen scale is broken 😩😩 Gotcha There’s a gold dealer not too far away, I’ll go ask them tomorrow then I’ll update in this thread :)) it’d be sick if it’s actual silver And if not, I’ll just rock it the same it’s dope Thanks💜💜

no ones making full sterling silver belts and selling it for less than the base price of sterling silver my main concern would be seeing if it's even plated with silver or something else, and if there is lead content there are no trustworthy consumer lead testers anymore after 3M bowed out so I'd get a jeweler to check it
