Screen resolution in games higher than the monitor resolution

Helping a friend who is using KDE Desktop with Nvidia card. They started out with a deck image and rebased to desktop, the issue was the same on both images. They have a 1440p main screen and a 4K secondary screen in portrait. The default display is set correctly in desktop settings, the 4K screen has some slight scaling applied. When they launch certain games (through steam), they open on the correct 1440p screen, and window options appear greyed out (Marvel Rivals, Days Gone, others), the window type will be borderless window, and the resolution will be set to 4k (despite the monitor being 1440p. It is greyed out with no way to change. Any advice?

Having same issue on gnome-nvidia, my 4k monitor is recognized in games as ~5000x2600, although it should be 3840 × 2160. my scaling is 150% so it seems there is some factor.

They just confirmed the same, they removed the scaling on the second monitor (4k was set to 150% scaling), and their resolution in games is now showing correctly. So, I wonder if it is actually rendering at 4k on the 1440p screen, or if its just a display bug but actually rendering at the native res of the monitor. I have to assume its rendering at 4k (which they said their GPU fan was going bananas).. Also - a portrait 24" 4K screen with no scaling is near impossible to use.
