Artifacting on the latest bazzite build:stable
Hi, i just updated the latest bazzite:stable build 14th March on the Ally X. I have been seeing some artifacts and glitches both in and out of games in game mode.
Reverting to the previous stable release removes this occurence

How often does it happen
I have tried rebooting several times. It is not available for the few minutes or until i boot up a game where the artifacting happens
Ok it crashes in games such as mh wilds and gow ragnarok
Occurence is fairly consistent
try toggle vrr
Nope, does nothing on my end
Same issue on my allyx after the same update
So basically don't update yet? Noted
I can confirm this also happens on Legion Go

Mmmm so nice
How do you get it to happen
I just installed bazzite and I think it has updated to the latest testing build.
It's mesa
So how do you get it to happen
for my rog ally z1e, after updating it to latest update, when in game mode whenever i play 1 game then exiting the game, the whole system is artifacting.
First time it appeared after reboot on its own, not under load. Second time after running a game.
can report im getting this issue too, also Legion GO
I am also seeing this, but rebasing to a few different previous stable versions did not fix it. Weird.
Fix in testing
Give it a try over the next few hours and it will hit stable

Thank you! Just tried it! Did a full clean install from the latest stable image to rule anything else out, and I am still getting some artifacting on my Legion Go, although it certainly seems to be happening less severely.
Same over here. I do notice slight frequence in crashing when opening steam menu in game whereby the whole display will just freeze and require a force restart
For my ROG Ally Z1E, after the update, the artifacting only happens in the main menu of game mode. However, while playing a game using game mode, I have not experienced artifacting so far.
we also get similar bugs here https://discordapp.com/channels/1072614816579063828/1350435706065129602
Could be correlation and not causation but setting Bios to 4GB VRAM instead of Auto seems to keep it from
occurring. 🤔
Still happens for me in the Steam UI on the last testing
go to stable
should be less now
latest stable…

surely its a bit better
is that mesa 24.0.1-6?
anyone remember which spot was to click on for power or settings?

latest mesa, restart fixed the weird ass missing text and text being smeared or whatever that was. Just a ton of pixels in random areas now
is it .6 or .5
mostly only noticeable when going into this, so definitely an improvement

well now that the mesa git is down fix will take a while
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa theyre doing better, more than halfway done
uh… 25.0.1 apparently
Sorry 25
::dinobones: well… f me i guess

oh cool, opening and closing steam menu makes it worse
How does one update mesa? I’m getting screen artifacts too
Why do i see an update for 17th march. Do i give it a try
:clueless:
i found the cause for the artifacts on the legion go
will try to get a build going later today
is the fix only for the legion go? and is it going to be in the testing branch?
are you on the latest version and get artifacts?
I'm in stable in the Rog Z1E and get them, I suppose I should try testing?
rip
ok maybe i was ambitious then
Im in latest stable with rog ally x. I somehow dont get anymore artifacts after setting my vram to be something other than auto
Yes that's the bug
actually, don't want to speak too soon, but I hadn't updated after your fix it seems, and for now things seem good on the Z1E!
and I have VRAM set to auto
Yeah there's a kernel argument from last year on the legion go
That fixed me from me
I did speak too soon :)
oh, the irony
anyways, in the meantime setting the vram to a different values fixes it, yes? doesn't it scale up even if it's set to a lower value, regardless of not being on auto?
The problem is the scaling
oh?
Yeah if autovram is too low oupsies
hey I've been getting this too on my legion go, do I just wait for a new update? (also do i update by doing 'ujust update' in terminal?)
I fixed it on ROG Ally Z1E by setting VRAM to anything other than Auto
I keep my OG Z1E on 6GB VRAM and have had no issues
Just chiming in, I experienced these exact same issues after having upgraded to the latest image
I’m on a Z1E ROG Ally
Sounds like changing VRAM away from Auto is the temporary workaround! It also worked for me LeGo.
how do i do that sorry? i got my LeGo recently.
I reinstalled this nearly 5 times before finding this post I thought my LeGo was broken lol , tried your suggestion and so far no more artefacting , is there a way to use an older image for this device ??
Yes, use the updates tab in handheld daemon to use an older version
Would that be in desktop view ??
Bith
Double tap legion r
Ok I did that and now legion controls and hhd not working at all
What
Hhd checked in desktop not connected also some of my controls are not working either in gamemode or desktop
Had to reinstall now no more artefacting or glitching
Until you update
No worries! It’s in the BIOS. You can get there by booting while holding the volume up button. You can search for more instructions. If you are interested there are also other tweaks you can make in there for minor improvements depending on your use case.
Personally I optimize for playability and battery at 15W so I use STT, 6 Cores and 6400MT as RAM speed, and Medium Charging Speed. I go for 48FPS with games like Cyberpunk at 15W at Medium settings.
@JC I'm guessing you use smokeless for the timings
No I didn’t know about this! Thanks for the tip!
I went to change it, and it wasn't on auto? I thought it turning it off auto was the fix
it was set to 3gb
Hmm weird. Sounds like the bug might be more when Auto sets it too low. And I wonder if 3G is too low cause I’m on 4G and have had no issues anymore.
How do I change the ram usage on ally x? Noob here
go to bios/if you're dual boot go to armory crate>setting>performance>gpu setting>memory assigned to gpu>choose 8gb.
It's in the bios
i put it to 8gb seemed to remove the artifacting on steam big picture mode. I am still havin trouble on the inputs.
Same here
Is there an update planned to correct this? I had some issues with windows that ended up causing me to have to completely wipe and reinstall everything, and I'm holding off on setting up bazzite again until this issue is fixed.
go to testing
and test
Mine did this today. Was my first experience with bazzite one I changed it from auto to 10 it fixed it
Let me rephrase. Is there an update to the stable version planned to correct this?
rebase to the last stable build that doesn't have this issue
Yes I'm aware I can do that. I'm asking about the future.
its in testing, it will eventually make its way to stable
Noted. Thank you.
if i want to install bazzite today how can i select the previous version so i dont have issues?
bazzite docs
Rebasing to a specific build requires users to open a host terminal and enter:in your case it would be or you can also disable updates for now by using
Bro so..... obviously they're gonna fix it at some point when they figure it out. If you intended to find out how soon tbh give that up. People work on this in free time for the most part. This isn't an actual JOB for most of the development team. Please just be patient or just try another linux distro for now. There's cachyos (hold off on that one) nobara, chimera os, and steam fork! 🙂
I don't think anyone(including myself) was looking for a quick fix, or detailed answers. Just some indication that it's being worked on. I asked specifically, because the older versions of bazzite-deck like to update on their own(even when disabled) and the latest test build at the time was still broken. Other distros are great on most machines, but here we were talking specifically about the Ally X, which would be lacking a lot of features on something like Chimera. Regardless, no disrespect was intended in any direction.
Fix is in testing
I'm aware. Thanks friend. 🙂
Suggests distro hopping, fix is in testin
Ok
Updater is fixed now
Next stable has both fixes
Now test the test build so we can ship it out
Thanks for the update!
Distro hopping is fun! It's cool to see how things are handled elsewhere. Honestly if it weren't for one bug i didn't know how to fix.... I would've stayed on nobara a bit longer.
Bro will testing on my end really help that much? If I'm honest I've never understood what i could do to help in that regard.
Yes so it's our job to not let you think about that too much
Trust me it shows lol
Test see if artifact is there say if it is or is not
I just came home build is straight out of the oven
Ally is loading
Should I intentionally set my vram to auto in bios? Right now I have it set to 6.
Yes
I'm on the ally z1e if that matters?
That's affected
So would be good to test
Okay bet. I'll go set my bios to auto and update then.
Pause. What option do pick for testing channel again? Been a while.

Hhd -> updates > switch version
That option is disabled now
Oh wow noted
Thanks to steam doing whatever it wants
By switch version you do mean rebase right? Just wanna be sure.

What's the test build #? I'll rebase and check right now if it helps.
yes, should rename that now
testing latest
So far it's good. Going to play around for an hour or so and see if anything pops up
So nearly two hours doing everything I can think of with this in both desktop and game mode I can say confidently the graphical issues are solved. The only thing I've found that is a mild inconvenience is that when I plug into my dock, the audio output doesn't change from the handheld speakers. I can do it manually and it works fine. I just have to redo it every time I plug in the dock.
I've done this and nothing?
whats that supposed to mean
Wrong group my bad
I've gone to hhd and followed your instructions. I get 1 gb download. It finishes...... I restart and I still seem to still be on stable
The rebase option in had doesn't seem to be working.
theres multiple bugs in the updater that need to be fixed, update failed
Why you no tell me this huh? WHY?! EVIL! (Jk)
most of them are fixed next stable
Whats the command to just do it from terminal?
but if the update succeeds you will be asked to reboot
brh rebase testing
Bet
Swear this wasn't always the command
So far the issue seems fixed. I also noticed it's showing a reasonable amount of vram used while I'm set to auto vram in bios. Things look good so far. No artifacts.
so.. im new to Linux. I'm looking at Bazzite since all i really use my machine for is games and Bazzite seems to be primarily built for that.. I had installed it on my older machine a couple weeks ago (Windows10 since its nearing EOL I figured it was worth a shot), I liked it and now I decided to dual boot onto my main machine.. downloaded the iso "built" for my machine installed it same as before.. but now when it loads it is just a few rows of artifacts, can't see anything else. reinstalled a few times now with redownloaded iso and checked each to make sure they matched.. tried installing to one of the M2 drives and also an SSD.. same outcome each time.. not sure whats causing it.
if it is going EOL for your hardware thats tough you know
my older machine has Win10.. not my main machine. the older machine installed bazzite fine.
the older machine wont run Win11 so it cant go any further.. figured testing linux on it was worth it
the older machine used the bazzite desktop install for GTX 1080.
the new one used RTX 40 install
Z1E here, testing does indeed seem to fix artifacting, thank you. Just to get an idea, how long does it usually take for these fixes to hit stable?
It's already there
stable? oh
that was quick indeed
Built like 5 min ago
so much for rebasing, guess I'll rebase back xD
thank you!
So how to I update exactly? says i'm on 315
got it, nvm.
Wait 1) should I just switch back to stable at this point then if I wasn't trying to trest anything but that? 2) if vram is set to auto in bios and the system actually needs and could use more vram will it auto adjust? Or should I just switch back to 6gb vram.
Yes
And yes
Only problem with autovram is when it breaks
That's around 2x per year
Wait to clarify are you saying yes to leaving it on auto and that it will change itself?
Leave it on auto
Rebase to stable
Thanks
