Fresh install doesn't launch in big picture
Hi, I installed bazzite a few minutes ago, when I boot into it, there's a black screen for about a minute, then it switches to KDE.
In KDE:
- the bottom panel is missing
- steam starts and doesn't remember my user (even though I set "remember me")
Any idea what I could do to make steam remember me and start in big picture mode?

we dont have Mesa 25 yet so the RX 9070 only supports basic output for the time being

1. KDE sometimes does that on new installs, its a bug in KDE, just rightclick choose enter edit mode and then add a default panel
2. steam crashes for some reason so you get kicked to desktop mode as a fallback. open the terminal and run
ujust fix-reset-steam
, when steam opens, log in as normal, if it still happens then re-run the command and this time when steam shows you the account selector you choose to remove the old account so you need to login with a username and password instead of clicking on the remembered profile and logging in.1. That fixed the panel issue, thanks!
2. Steam is still crashing while trying to start big picture mode session
When I launch big picture from the desktop steam version everything works fine
I noticed an error message when launching steam from terminal, said "Unable to initialize Vulkan", could that have something to do with it?
Additional info - even when I log into the desktop steam app, close it and reopen it, it keeps asking for me to log in again
I'm logging in via the qr code, could that be an issue?
no
did you do what i said?
run the command and then remove the steam account from the steam account list and then sign in
also what is your hardware and
rpm-ostree status
I did
Ryzen 2 CPU, RX9070 GPU
41.20250301.1
ah thats the reason

Another update - when I launch steam with "steam" in terminal, it starts just fine
Looks like bazzite-steam adds some option that makes it re-request login π€·ββοΈ
the card released during a linux conference where everyone involved in getting it ready was attending the conference
no its steam crashing in gamemode which forces steam to ask for user and password again, this is a function of steam
Ah, I see
give people a chance to get home first then work will start on getting mesa 25 ready, we did what we could without the right people available but the build failed as some packages need to be updated that kyle does the packaging for, and he was at the conference
bazzite-steam in terminal also forces a new login
steam doesn't require a new login
Sure, I didn't know that the new GPU would require a new build, I thought amdgpu driver would just kinda work, maybe with degraded performance, but at least something
I'll try again in a week or so, thanks for the info π
they do kinda just work, as long as it is not on a new architecture version. this is normal and expected each time a new amd card comes out and its on a new node :clueless:
Btw I checked and it's the '-steamdeck' flag that causes me to login every time
but this time it also released in the middle of a big linux conference
yes because that is required for gamemode to function and you should not mix
-steamdeck
and running steam without it as its 2 different clients kind of
so when steam crashes in gamemode
you get kicked to desktop
and you have to login againI see, so bazzite-steam should start a proper steamdeck session, but since I'm starting it from an existing desktop it can't do it and just kinda crashes to login screen?
bazzite-steam checks if you are on the
-deck
image and makes sure you dont footgun the steam client
essentially if you start gamemode it applies -steamdeck
if you start steam through the start menu in desktop mode, it applies -steamdeck
I see, thanks π
but mesa 25 should be in bazzite
testing
soon once people get home from the conference and have a moment to sit down again
so give it a few days
