Dual Booting and why I shouldn't keep it
Hey. I'm new to the server but I joined to get some help. I have a Asus Rog Ally that I've had for a few weeks but i'e had problems performance wise with Windows. I installed Bazzite OS and after toying around, I decided I want to just partition the rest of my SSD to Bazzite and remove Windows completely. How do I go about it?

is this the thing you were referring to in the other channel?
or do you have another issue as well?
@Calcobeater
This is what I was referring to yes
Just so I understand, can you tell me how exactly your computer ios setup?
What do you mean? Like how the operating systems are set up?
Because if so, they're sharing a 512gb SSD
you got your laptop with windows on it on the second half of drive A, now you've installed linux newly to the second half of drive A? is that correct?
oof.
Yep
And it's the Rog Ally, not a laptop
So basically (someone else feel free to tell me I'm wrong) drives list data like a book reads words, from right to left. Under normal circumstances, you'd be able to write more words to more blank pages (to the right) but you've got windows in chapter 1, linux in chapter 2 and chapter 3 does not have any blank pages left.
You can't extend chapter 2, but you can append chapter 1 as blank pages to before chapter 2, which would function as a D:) drive does on windows
essentially, splitting your disk in half.
In order to make it one entire partition instead of two halves, you'd have to completely reformat essentially.
nuking both OSes.
(and re-installing linux)
Basically I gotta nuke both OS?
That or you can put up with having your disk space split into two partitions.
you could also shift the partition to the left but as a systems administrator that's waaaay beyond my paygrade to do, let alone teach how to do.
(bootloaders make it complicated.)
Well, Most of the games I had installed are on Micro SDs so, nuking it won't be much a problem
Plus the roms I have are on those micro sds too
I would recommend you get a second opinion before nuking anything, but if you don't give a shit, go for it.
...please have your microSD card unplugged when you reformat btw
it's fine with it in but it mitigates the probability of nuking it by accident.
I've done it before.
They're both out so yeah
Also, some other random advice
if you decided to re-install windows alongside linux, make sure any data drives/disks/cards/whatever are unplugged during installation
windows' installer is obnoxious and tends to put its bootloader wherever it pleases.
even if you explicitly tell it not to.
I don't think I'll want to install windows anytime soon because it's been giving me such tough times trying to run games like Overwatch
One other thing, Am I still able to use Xbox Cloud Streaming on Steam OS?
"Oh crap, my headset needs a driver update and the software doesn't run on linux"
stupid shit like that.
Probably.
I'd say that has more to do with using the right browser.
Well I can install Chrome along with Firefox so I'll have that going
yup!
I'll leave this unchecked if someone else has a second opinion which I hope someone does
I don't wanna install anything until I know nuking is the only option left
realistically, what I'm telling you to do are things I would do and would fuck up my setup if I ignored
particularly this
Yeah, definitely dont wanna do that
basically if windows ends up putting the bootloader where it shouldn't and you distrohop, windows bricks.
Out of curiosity, are you a linux user on your main system?
My friend, idk what the fuck Linux is capable of or not
The Rog Ally shipped with Windows installed
I'm just asking because if you use linux on your desktop and linux on your ally and no windows is involved at any point; there are situations where you could be given a headache if you don't know how to handle them.
I just don't want you to feel screwed.
I.E. this.
Fair point
I abandoned windows after they unceremoniously bricked my VR headset.
so
Dang
yeah not happy.
I've more or less moved onto PSVR2
I think the valve index works on linux.
Is that so?
Seemingly. makes sense.
Interesting
