wearing a regular button down unbuttoned/as a shirt jacket
specifically talking about button down shirts in denim or chambray
I see shirts online that are in denim or chambray that aren't sold as overshirts, but I also see similar shits that are sold as overshirts/shirt jackets. Besides the sizing (as I understand it, overshirts are a little oversized), is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to wear a chambray or denim button down shirt unbuttoned/treat it like a shirt jacket?

It’s not as warm
But other than that there’s no reason why not
I actually didn’t mess with overshirts for years because I tried to use my existing button up shirts as oversshirts and I did not like the look. In my experience, the overshirt will be a bit bigger and a bit heavier so it will wear more like a jacket. Now I do have bigger and heavier shirts that I will also wear as an overshirt. But I have also worn oversized chambray shirts (that are maybe mid weight) as an overshirt too, with some success. So I guess all I’m saying is try it and see if you like the way it hangs/lays…
I’m gen X and always wore shirts/flannels that way. Very rarely would I wear it buttoned up. Someone referred to the look as “90’s coded” but I don’t really know what that means or if it’s good or bad. Ha! I would only wear it buttoned if you’re tucking it in. Chambray? Definitely open with a white tee underneath.
