2nd screen freezing. Not sure of the cause.
I wills tart typing on vesktop on my 2nd screen or even browsing on my 2nd screen. Sometimes just as I click onto my main screen and I will find my 2nd screen just freezes completely. Wondering if anyone has an idea what could be causing this.

Wayland multi-monitor screen freeze
Just wanted to confirm that my solution was due to messing with display manager in one way or the other. Ultimately though I feel the most likely fixing of the solution comes from changing adaptive sync from always to off then automatic. To add more detail I first changed my 2nd screens refresh rate to something lower which definitely seemed to...

Trying to screenshot stuff after this has occured but getting this issue:
Eventually stuck myself to one screen and it reset a bunch of apps and my desktop in general it seems. Screenshot now works and cannot find 2nd monitor till I reboot

What happens when I unplug my display and replug. It knows I have done that but does not want to show the screen. COuld be interesting for clues as to what is happening
arr nm I just had to select my 2nd screen in the drop down and enable it
so atm when this bug occurs I have to disconnect my dp and reconnect then in the settings re-add my display to enabled
Are you still using an Nvidia GPU Marko? Did this only start happening recently? It might be a GPU driver regression
I am using a nvidia GPU
Around the 22nd Jan maybe earlier.
THis is the first time I realised I could just unplug the monitor and plug it back in so not sure if it fixes itself after that but has occurred every day since at least a few times
Actually I first post about it on the 19th Jan

withotu asking for help assuming it will sort itself and hoping sm1 else had it
lol
So you suggest maybe trying a different gpu driver and see if it no longer occurs?
Yeah I'd rebase to middle of Jan and see if the issue occurs or not. From there you might be able to see what changed. It might also just be a weird kde/wayland/nvidia issue
Also are you on the bazzite-nvidia-open image or the older bazzite-nvidia image?
urm I am not sure
sorry had some people message so just seen
lets see

Open
Is it the screen with HDR that is freezing?
nope the other one
and this was not whilst gaming. Actually if I dnt move my mouse to it or do anything it never happens I think
weirdly it is being fairly consistant since the first one happened which I would norm restart my entire pc once it occurs
If you swap the cables around I wonder if the other screen will freeze
with any luck it just ends up being that I Had to replug dp cable
ooo will check that too if this keeps occuring. WIll let you know as I happened to find out abotu the DP just now
With your help thread hopefully someone out of the 12k+ people here will be having the same issue.
I can say it does not happen on windows ofc
same cables
I'd try the rebase to mid Jan and see if the problem disappears
okay if it happens again (as replug seems to be working r eally well atm) then I will try end of dec or something. Only because I think it could have happened a bit before I posted about it
Thank you :). Never tried the rebasing before otherwise may have tried earlier. Like I did rebase to test once
will figure it out as it seems to be easy to go to a previous version from what u said
Aighjt time I try rebase
as it still happens sadly
if I rebase I basically loose out on updates right?
you get flatpak updates but you loose out on base image updates
I will try to find some other solution for now I think but rebasing ofc could help identify the issue too
yeah mostly to see of you can get an idea of what's causing the issue. You wouldn't want to stay on a version for months
I have notes on rebasing to testing versions. Need to now find documentation and add to my notes of rebasing to lower versions
arr there is a rollback helper utility
well that is easy enough will give it a go
Bazzite Rollback Helper - Bazzite Documentation
Bazzite is a custom image built upon Fedora Atomic Desktops that brings the best of Linux gaming to all of your devices.
yeah
brh list
to get all the versions available brh rebase <image-tag>
yes figured it out. Quite simple
they made this really simple
we,ll frick I will try the 30/12/24 one
Well that is the one I picked and I reset my shiz. Hopefully I am on that now fr. Need to see if there is a way to check

I guess the documentation says it will lock you out of future updates and my automatic updates are disabled so that might be a good sign
that it worked. It defo said when I did it that it was switching order of images or whatever
so yes probably did its thing
just going to try and break it now
your update is pointing to an exact tag and since the tag never changes your image never updates
MIght be fixed at least now. DOing my best to break it. WIll report back in a week or something
or if it happens again lol
got to give it a chance to occur
though it would norm happen a few times in a day so maybe in a few days
I could be typinh on my 2nd screen like now then click to the other then boom this screen frozen
or sometimes mid typing on 2nd screen
it is just interacting with it often
well had 3 youtube videos runnign at one all over the place (gpu relates stuff is my idea) plus bg3 (hdr gamescope) and moving windows rapidly etc. Stuff that could make it happen and nothing. tbc on the next episode
Does the image also take you back some gpu drivers?

liek flatpak ones
cos it could be one of those that cause it I guess
it just takes you back with gpu drivers in the image, you might need to do a
flatpak update
to bring in the older gpu driver dependencies in the flatpaksarr okay only asking because I have the option to update all these nvidia flatpak drivers so I thought it somehow reverted that

So we get flatpaks for the same drivers we already have on the system?

just run
flatpak update
in the terminal. it's easier than seeing what the discover store is doingyes was curious how it owrked
will do that

Oh you told me to be fair
they are dependencies for my current gpu drivers?
For a second I thought it was like a flatpak version of my gpu drivers lol
yep. Well I learnt something

OKay the freeze happened again interestingly. I wonder if I was using x11 back then or something
LOgging out did not fix it. Logging back in fixed the 2nd screen
so something restarts that fixes it
a good clue for when it happens agian to find what it is
You know something we didn't try. Try make a new user account log into that and see if you can reproduce the issue in the new user account. Then you can check if it's some weird config error or some form of screen setting corruption or something
okay will try that
today is the day I sort it
will log into this one and see if it occurs

I was trying some other things chatgpt mentioned as my screen was froze to see if any of them would unfreeze it. Nothing lol. ANywya trying this now
I'd remove that screenshot, you have your steam qr code visible lol
@Marko
just lets sm1 login
afaik
I quit steam anyway
has no personal information on t here afaik
deleted anyway but I did think of that
so far no issues on this 2nd user
tbc
Well that's both a good and a bad thing. But it would explain why this issue seems to be specific to you
indeed kind of sucks if that is what it is potentially cos I would have to somehow reconfigure shiz in my main account to getit working as lot sof stuff stored on there I guess
Also explains why it carried on happening after the rebasing
Have you ever cleared your ~/.cache folder on your main account?
nope
It fixes a LOT of things
lol
will try it
that is a bit funny
not sure it does not happen here yet but it defo could have occured by now on the other login
will try that now though cos I feel it is not happening here
time for sudo rm -r ~/.cache I guess
oh wait not that
just everythign in it
lol
do I need sudo privs or can I use gui. WIll just logout and come back to see chat
it remakes the folder. just rename it
okay will rename it
brb
going to rename this one

that's it
done

and cache did regenerate
so I guess now wait to see if shit happens then
man I am so glad we dnt have carl bot in this server so I can say shit happens LOL (u norm get mod blocked for basic things)
dang I think my new user caused that. Time to get to work with changing that back

got to have my theme implemented lol
With the server getting so big they might end up adding a mod bot at some point
I just hope it does not disable the word shit cos I say it way too much
I would retype every sentence for life
Interesting that things haven't been getting out of hand with 13k people lol
tbh it sucks for any community that really has to moderate
we have a 13k plus one ourselves and the main thing is just getting rid of idiots
which sadly go hand in hand with our specific community that we have lol
but still
hate changing icons on this thing

actually I may know how now though these days
in a much easier way

dang looks like back to old way of copying it out
then doing this sort of thing
yep that worked
arr yes and with vesktop they make it so it gets replaced once you change it so you have to make read only again lmao
well turns out I just needed to delete the flatpak I installed from the other user
So far nothing happened to freeze mys creen
that may have really fixed it
I guess that can happen on any linux distro. Feels like must know knowledge
I really should add the .cache thing to the docs 😅
But how do you phrase it, "Are you having weird errors that you can't explain?" remove your .cache folder and hope for the best
First time I heard about it and honestly even if u doc it I would have never have known its capabiltiies till first hand experience lol
lol
but true
weird shit happens just do that shit and it may happen to work bonkers
I mean I may still have the issue but tbc
lol
god dang it. NOw a space issue but I think you really solved it

just need to rebase and see if it happens
man this is great
thank you it seems atm lmao but thank you anyway
lmao

time to get cleaning
and done. Man 2tb goes quick if you download your steam library and forget yourself
cannot believe I had it with a few kb to spare lmao
Well that's cool glad that it helped 🙂
Yes looks it
Hard to tell as one of those things that just happened
Bazzite is pretty great even on old SSD drives. This test machine I'm on is an old 128GB SSD in and enclosure
But now I can better manage shiz
Going to delete the test account now
As I guess like windows that uses resources
that will give you a bunch of space too
Yeah, steam download and a bunch of flatpak configs
I wonder how many other distros I have assumed broken when all I had to do was delete teh cache. I mean not that I plan to go back as really it is all the same and this offers a stable experience with game patches etc
an actual gem of knowledge that
So far it's fixed
* Broken icons
* KDE System settings crashing on launch
* and now a screen randomly freezing lol
Well hopefully will see
cache deleting only resolved kde issues generally?
Also fixes some gnome issues
wonder why it is so common (kind of) for things to corrupt the cache to make things unstable but regardless happy knowing that we have a real decent solution
dang it was not the cache in the end. Been playing bg3 and noticed it sadly
just took longer to happen I suppose
Will test the new user for longer and see what happens
try play bg3 on that user XD
Arr just seen sm1 with the exact same issue on an older version of fedora https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/12y5lu9/second_monitor_freezes_randomly_on_fedora_38/
Reddit
From the Fedora community on Reddit: Second monitor freezes randoml...
Explore this post and more from the Fedora community
finally googled the right thing lol
seems to happen to gnome users interestingly
2 years old andothers had this experience with the exact same description.
evena comment 2 months ago near the bottom saying they have it on fedora 41. An interesting one
Did you see this comment? "Then just change the refresh rate or the resolution of the frozen monitor, revert the change and it should work again." See if that fixes it
good point
will try that
I think I saw it but it did not register properly
lol
2nd monitor now at 144hz instead of 180
may even leave it like that for now just to see if that does shiz
I really hope that is the magic pill. I really like my linux desktop
plus it looks nice af now lol
Yeah once you've had a version of Linux working well for a while, you pretty much never want to go back lol
Btw can you tell the difference between 60hz and 120hz because I sure can't? lol
like 30 vs 60 is huge
I can sadly
well at least bet ween 165 and that as that was my old main monitor
I defo can tell from 240 to that
whcih is my current main monitor
tbh 2nd monitor does not matter too much refresh wise
as long as still smooth
but even 60 I can live but I defo feel it with general browsing even
agree 30 to 60 defo noticable though
yeah that difference is actually a painful different. Over and above is more just nice to have honestly.
Hopefully that refresh rate tip will be the trick to solving this
indeed
nice to see your messages come through without a frozen 2nd screen atm
lmao
well we hit the 30 minute mark and so far so good lol
tbc
1h 30 mark soon
seems this could really be the solution
if nothing by the end of the day marking the refresh rate change of my 2nd monitor as the solution
Even if it is't the overall solution, it still seems to reduce the frequency of the issue
yes not happened once atm
and it defo would have happened by now
done all sorts since and jsut had pc on
had a chat with a friend that wanted me to post something to reinforce his github post and all the tasks I did there whilst chatting to him definitely would have caused it in the past
back to efficient desktop operation it seems
Yay 🙂
Most random solution ever
At least refresh rate makes more sense than clearing the cache
one random thing I noticed and not sure if this is because vesktop updated or because I compile vesktop now using a script or something. My games now show me as playing them via vesktop. IN the past I had to use steam
maybe because I am not using the flatpak anymore
yes maybe
I did look at those cache folders and a lot of graphics related cache there
I think some things can still be flakey at times with linux but that solution is killer. I will prob post on that reddit to reinforce changing refresh rate works
once I know slightly more ofc and change it back
but yes never would have expected that to be the fix but I guess whatever manages those changes in display manager bugged out
Glad it is not my like customized changes
cos I knwo like changing things with plasma layout etc can cause things too
My first both screen freezing
But I think that was pure unluckiness because I closed bg3 as soon as it opened which uses gamescope as well
Prob not related lol
I do still think it is over and that was a bug relating to what I just did
ignore the dust
laziness
as long as contents on screen looks good XD
It's just your computer reminding you to take a break and get some fresh air
it will have to wait 20 more minutes
exactly
arr sadly I came back home logged in and found the issue occurred again
may have to find a way to get x11 back lol
rpm-ostree install plasma-workspace-x11
It is what it is
just want my pc functioning 100% without the bugs. Wayland a lot better than before though in general. See if this solves it
nm does not let you login when you do that so uninstall and rip x11

THe conversation developed and he thinks 550 drivers will stop any issues but I will await to see if my issue comes back cos I think messing with adaptive sync may have sorted it.
but last time I said that the error appeared as I said it was resolved
lol
Still not had the issue all day lets go
It looks like you have found a bunch of ways to reduce the issue at least
yes nothing happening atm
You going to have to put a big summary at the end of this thread if you want it to be useful for anyone else 😅
my 2nd screen is at full refresh rate
yes exactly just want to see the end result before a final post
its hard to say what worked in the end if nothing else but messing with display management or jus thaving adaptive sync changed in there
or a combo of messing with all those things lol
I think I will post my solution as everything has been running well
so it is time lol
