alpha H +1 or only Alpha H ?

for total no of hyperconjugative strs some ques uses n+1 formula and some uses only 'n'. so what to do when nothing is mentioned in exam?

we were told: no of hyperconjugating structure = no of alpha hydrogen

It depends on whether you consider the original structure as one of the hyperconjugating structures or not basically. Or if you want to consider it a hybrid like you'd do with resonance. That's all the difference is. As long as you're consistent, you can judge stability by either number.

i think the doubt was what do you do when a question asks the total number of hyperconjugative structures directly if the question doesnt specify convention then i feel like guess one of the 2 possible answers lmao (or skip)

generally II've never seen such questions being asked, over no. Of alpha hydrogen. It's generally just being used for stability comparisons and others. So working with any of them should do.

I see, if I would've been there, I would've gone for no. Of alpha hydrogen = no. Of structures if not mentioned.

one of my friend said that we have to take only alpha h when its written (involving C-H bond breaking) if not then alpha h + 1

this seems to have become a big confusion. let's see what to do.
