Plug in x=y=2 (Ah sorry, keyboard problems) you get f(2)+f(2)+f(4)=f(2)*f(2)+2 and plugging in values you get the answer. Also the question states f(1) is not equal to 1, reason for that being: 1. x=y=1 gives f(1)=2 or 1. 2. Plugging y=f(x)=1 gives f(x) being a constant function whereas plugging in y=f(1)=2 gives a tautology.
