“Failed to add the device: Unable to allocate requested partition scheme.”

Hey y’all. I’m hoping to get some help with my dual-boot Bazzite installation on Ally X. I’ve been following the RetroGameCorp dual-boot guide, as well as the written guide. I am able to get all the way into the Bazzite installer, but I’m having some trouble with the Installation Destination. Every time I try to set up a separate EFI partition via manual partitioning, I get this error. Does anyone have any ideas what I might be missing? I’ve gone through the whole process seven or eight times now.

make sure bitlocker is and fast startup in windows is properly turned off, for bitlocker this process takes time. also please read the dual boot guide on https://docs.bazzite.gg so you do not footgun yourself, the way RetroGameCorp installs it in the video is not optimal and will let windows happily wipe the bazzite bootloader during windows updates that interact with the EFI partition containing the windows bootloader (which the automatic setup will use and we cannot change that)

Bazzite is a custom image built upon Fedora Atomic Desktops that brings the best of Linux gaming to all of your devices.

I just double checked that both were off and I’m still getting the same error when I do the manual partitioning

Yup, I've gone through the guide and made sure I didn't miss anything multiple times. Not sure what I'm missing. I do have a very large (8tb) drive, maybe that could be the problem? I have it partitioned to 4tb and 4tb

not sure, we dont make anaconda and it might be an issue with anaconda. i vaguely remember someone else mentioning having issues with an 8tb drive and anaconda

Do you know if there's any way for me to reach out to the folks who work on Anaconda?

that would be redhat and fedora upstream i believe @Noel you probably know the answer to this better than me as i dont know all the right channels for fedora upstream but they are reworking anaconda

Anaconda Matrix would be the best place to reach them.

Yeah, they seem to think I'm encountering this error https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2326270 The installer is currently not allowing placing boot partitions at offset bigger than 2 TiB. I tried again with a smaller partition, and it still didn't work. Any ideas for workarounds? I spent too much on this drive not to use it haha.

Have you tried installing from the Silver blue installer and then rebasing?
Ben

Yup I just tried that, it has the same issues

Only thing I can think of that might work would be install to a smaller drive and use something like clonezilla to maybe clone the partition over to your larger drive? Then expand the partition to fill the drive?
Ben

oh that's a great idea, I'll give that a shot a little later

Yeah, otherwise not really much we can do since we rely on anaconda to do the install.

Okay after a lot of troubleshooting this has worked for me! The only step left is to extend the volumes. I've tired this both in Windows Disk Management as well as KDE Partition Manager and neither of them will seem to let me extend the volumes now that I've installed Bazzite. Any ideas?

You can use a live usb of pretty much any distro that comes with Gparted and resize your Bazzite partition in that. You can't use KDE partition manager in Bazzite because you cannot change resize the currently mounted partition. And Windows has no idea what btrfs is so it can't resize it I usually use a Linux Mint live USB for this sort of thing

@wolfyreload So I can resize bazzite this way, but there's no way to resize Windows?

You can resize Windows in the Disk Management screen. You might be able to do it in Gparted but I prefer resizing Windows in Windows If the EFI partition for Bazzite is in the way of expanding Windows then you'll need to move the EFI partition and other Bazzite partitions in Gparted

I did a video of the reverse of what you are trying to do https://youtu.be/uy8mi1pAj8E but the idea of shrinking/expanding partitions in Gparted should still work.

After running Bazzite for a few months, you may wish to allocate additional disk space for Bazzite if you are dual-booting Bazzite and Windows on the same drive.
