Madras shirts in India
I'm spending 6 weeks in India and would love to try and pick up a Madras shirt while I'm here. I've done some searching online and can only come up with US brands using imported fabric (Brooks, PRL etc).
Does anyone know of any shops/brands/markets selling Madras shirts in India? If not other clothing recommendations would also be appreciated. I'll be visiting Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Goa and Kerala (not actually going to Chennai sadly)

the market for upscale madras shirts is mostly in the west, but I really like this brand and would see if they have stockists in india
Original Madras Trading Company
Madras Handmade Shirts Company,Stylish Shirts for Men, Old Madras Trad
Original Madras Trading Company is a 3rd generation family business established in the 1970s now reviving the craft of hand weaving Madras in Madras and making a range of exclusively handwoven garments from button down shirts to jackets and bath robes.
Ah that makes sense! Will look into Original Madras though. Kardo looks brilliant and not too far from where I'm staying so I'm going to check it out for sure. Thank you!
you can find some madras shirt makers in india but when i was there last i couldn't find anything better than the brand above ^ maybe others have recs too tho
the ivy brands have nice ones too that are more traditional obviously
They're not really called Madras shirts in India, like Brazil nuts aren't called Brazil nuts in Brazil
Literally any mens shirt shop will have a bunch that fall under the "Madras" category
Fabindia and Anokhi will have tons of shirts with vegetable dyes which are nice
They have stores in all the cities you're going to
If you're going to Kochi in Kerala, the fort area has a lot of fun clothing shops
Would avoid looking for clothes in Goa, it's mostly hippy shit targeted at Israelis fresh off their military time
You mean these?
If yes then I'd recommend the Bombay Shirt Company.... Their store is available in Mumbai.... They also offer full customisation, and their quality is also great on top of that Indian price is pretty good in comparison of foreign pricing...
If you have any colour preference then lemme, i can contact them and ask if it's available.
Another option would be to get the desired fabric and get them stitched.... The stitching cost for a shirt is pretty affordable (₹1000-1500 per shirt which is 10-16£)
yeah but unless you're in a place for long enough and have someone with a tailor they trust it's not worth it
They also offer fast stitching services.
Thanks so much, this is all really helpful! Looks like the Bombay shirt company has a store not too far away in Delhi so I'll check that out. Also planning on going to the main Anokhi store when I'm Jaipur next week!
will def be avoiding that haha
will take a look in these stores first and then see whether I'm after anything more custom - thanks both!
Yeah, i think they have 4...
Good luck and Have fun! Btw try to stay away from scammers, you'll find a lot of them while traveling.....
Thanks so much! haha so I've heard, will do
