Looking to do a wardrobe overhaul and start from scratch

I've always preferred wearing more workwear styles, think Iron Snail, edgy albert, but living in Texas my whole life , I've always loved wearing cowboy boots alongside the outfits. I'm just looking for help with inspiration with types of pants, boots/shoes, tops and good companies that stick to 100% cotton cuts, as well as high quality denim brands. If you have any links to any pieces that youve enjoyed feel free to leave them! Although i think just helping with a list would be very appreciated. For any extra info, im 6'3 with an athletic build and dont mind buying online or going to a store.

I recommend building a wardrobe one piece at a time rather than doing a complete overhaul. Often as you buy stuff you realize what you really want.

Waywt is a great place to start for inspo. Some people you might like off the top of my head; soup, jawntanamo, digs, leo, and warp

Where in Texas are you? Do you have any links to specific styles/inspo you like? Also, what is your budget? I think the best place to start is finding straight or loose jeans you like and a couple pairs of boots. For jeans: Wrangler, Orslow, TCB, Sugarcane, and Full Count are brands I see recommended a lot. For Texas specific recs: I just bought some Freenote Cloth deck pants on sale at Manready in Houston. Imogene and Willie is based in Austin, and I love the fatigues I have from there. Stag Provisions in Dallas has a lot of Workwear/Western inspired stuff you might like.

Im in the houston area as well! I think vintage, workwear/Americana with subtle bits of country( mostly just the boots) are typically my style Budget wise- I Dont really know where to start, since im taking it slow, i was thinking about starting out with 500-600 for now to get some solid peices, then moving on to the rest later down the line when im more comfortable with what i like and ik what fits me I just grabbed some jeans from Buck mason and i really liked them, but i think id like to branch out into other colors outside of jeans.

I think raisins advice is solid, if you see something in someones waywt post that you like my advice would be to ask them what it is. Most people/everyone will be happy to talk about a certain item if asked

Only thing that i Dont really know how to style is wider leg pants, that seems to be popular in this stle typically but i never knew if it fit my body type or not
zeometer
zeometer2mo ago
wide pants fit all body types in the sense that people of all body types wear them; whether it fits your particular style or taste is up to you https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1331096421545279498/1331126277528227903 most of these people wear wider trousers, plus people like Talbot and ethan (The Teenage Gentleman lol)

rcmontgomery2mo ago
Do you own any wide leg pants? You may want to start with a cheaper pair and see if it works for you. I think wide leg can work with all body types, but what matters is if you like them.

I dont no, I think this is kinda what i was asking for originally, just a good list of types of pants from brands to try my knowledge of clothes is very narrow, so i dont know much about what to look for when it comes to differnt types, I know what style i like, but sometimes dk how to carry it out idk if that makes sesne

"workwear" can also include things like carpenter pants, painter pants, engineer pants, fatigues (or baker pants), and the general "work pants" because each company has its own interpretation of 'workwear' it's likely going to be easier to look at people's fits and seeing what you like first, then asking for the id - ask in #waywt because people are more than willing to talk about their clothes

Three threads with good recs from the past year. Check out what pants those companies offer and what speaks to you. A lot of those brands are $$$$$, so people here can also point you to similar looks for less if you find specific things you like.

I was just putting together a list from 2 of these threads actually! ty for takin the time to respond, i think a lot of my issue is coming down to the fact that a lot of the reccomendations ive recieved as well as seen are designed for different climates tbh, i think i might have to make something up on my own

I havent heard of two of those and i just looked up some from some brands i liked, those are definetly some good options i think a lot of my issue is the tops, its so hard to make a layered outfit when you dont live in a area with 4 seaons :nooooo:

I have no idea how warm that jacket is but even a medium weight jacket over a SS t-shirt feels like overkill half the winter down here. I went on a long walk outside in a thick long sleeve T the other day, and it was too hot. It snowed the day before lol.

Yeah, i think a lot of what ill have to do for lving in texas and liking this style is sticking to Exotic boots with well fitted and high quality pants and shirts the boots can be a statement piece then maybe add in a braided belt for texture? thats kinda my crackpot idea
zeometer

denim/work/flannel shirts, trucker or denim jackets, flannel, rmfb vests all options

VibeCheckOP2mo ago
What do you think about items to rotate in during warmer months?
zeometer
zeometer2mo ago
aside from rolling up said denim shirts, more interesting western shirts, short sleeve button ups (with or without visible undershirt under), vintage tees
zeometer
zeometer2mo ago
shots from #waywt-highlights during the warmer months - digs, soup, ye old tim, the teenage gentleman lol, jawntanamo_bae, and me (i've worn the same fit with harness boots fwiw)

stuff like more distinct belts, scarves, bandanas, belts, jewelry all can be rotated in in lieu of layering. most of these are worth checking on ebay since imo vintage ones are better

VibeCheckOP2mo ago
how do you feel aobut doing braided belts? i feel like that might add a lot fo texture( i like braided belts and im trying to justify a purchase) also I definitely like those inspo pics, i could definitely make something like that

rcmontgomery2mo ago
I like them a lot, but that doesn’t matter. Style is more fun & will give you more confidence when you learn to just trust what you like. Current men’s fashion is a lot less prescriptive than it used to be.
VibeCheck
VibeCheckOP2mo ago
I definetly agree on the confidence part! a lot of this wardrobe goals started becuase im about to turn 21 very soon and im trying to get my fashion down since ive been and about to start going out with friends more and ive always noticed when ive done social stuff and felt more at home with what i really like to wear i feel so much better and confident
zeometer
zeometer2mo ago
very much the case - being true to yourself consistently is how you get "better" at fashion plus you're at an age where you're still learning about life; the people you meet and the things you do will help shape your tastes even more

random, but are u familar with buck mason jeans at all?

rcmontgomery2mo ago
Yeah, I actually have a pair of jeans in the full saddle cut and corduroy pants in Ford Standard. I like both cuts, but neither work for me in their chinos for some reason. Why do you ask?
VibeCheck
VibeCheckOP2mo ago
Oh shit cool, I was asking cause i just got their ford standard and I cant really seem to find anything on them in terms of their longevity I got them after taking forver to find something that fit me and they seemed to fit great, but i cant find a lot of reviews on them tbh

rcmontgomery2mo ago
Denim heads probably know more, but they seem like good quality to me.

I tried looking for them too but its not RAW so, they dont really care much

I wouldn’t overthink it. Trying to “qualitymax” is a trap. I think all these style/fashion communities can be a great resource, but if you aren’t careful, it can create a mentality of needing the community’s approval that you are only buying the “best” brands And not wanting others to disapprove of you didn’t buy the absolute highest quality for the price Vibes & fit are more important than maximizing the quality of every piece

That is, extremly fair, I Guess im just worried about wasting my money on a bunch of shit that falls apart I think im running into the same block of where to start with this style, im trying to make it something interesting, but so much of it seems hard to make interesitng due to me being in houston lol I can make interesting outfits, but it feels like western workwear style runs either to close to costume, or to close to boring
rcmontgomery
rcmontgomery2mo ago
Yeah, I think avoiding insane ripoffs is good, but usually those are easy to spot. Occasionally, I just say fuck it and buy it anyways. I am in Dallas but can relate so much to this. The lack of fashion culture here can feel stifling, and dressing within a regional context is important to me (it doesn’t have to be for you). Dressing like a hip New Yorker doesn’t make a ton of sense to me, but I also have a style that doesn’t fit with what most people wear here. The lack of in person shopping is also an obstacle. I think this is just trial and error and thinking about what exactly it is you like or don’t like in your own or others’ outfits:
zeometer
zeometer2mo ago
there's an element of time associated with this as well. you mentioned these are clothes that make you feel good when you're out socially - if thats the case then keep wearing these things you'll get more comfortable with wearing clothes, people will accept that that is what you wear more often, and it'll just be an extension of who you are, whether that's a person who is more theatric or more reserved in their dressing check #inspiration and check #waywt and other sources of media as well; you'll never know what could inspire you in some way
rcmontgomery
rcmontgomery2mo ago
Yeah, if he is worried about it being too much for others, starting to dress in a new way will always get some attention at first, but people start to see it as you quickly. I also think certain things are too much for what I personally want though. In that case, it is more the trial and error I was talking about. I do find certain styles objectively costumey, but that can be a good thing if that’s what you are going for and fits you. I am thinking of David Bowie-type fits, which fit who he was and were also usually awesome.

If jeans are your thing, i’d recommend a pair of wrangler 13mwz’s. flattering fit for most everyone, and affordable

@rcmontgomery @zeometer yall said that yall have somewhat simalar styles to the ones weve been talking about, do yall have any unique favorite pieces that yall like a lot? it feels like the best stuff ive found has all been at vintage stores tbh
rcmontgomery
rcmontgomery2mo ago
Honestly, all my favorite pieces right now are random weird ass hats. And @zeometer has me influenced into thinking a Pink’s window one needs to be next I’ve been wearing some pretty simple outfits recently: jeans, Cowboy boots or Drakes Crosby’s, and flannels and wide wale corduroy shirts.
zeometer
zeometer2mo ago
yeah it's 10 degrees here so the most interesting things have been harness boots and paint splattered dickies pants i do think the users referenced in this post are better sources for "interesting" pieces in this style https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1331096421545279498/1331126277528227903 to your bigger concern, if you have some of the clothes it may help to post some of your actual outfits and how you feel they are or aren't interesting
