You could've taken it opposite also but you would have arrived at the same result. Just note friction is opposite to kx

torque is due to friction so just do f.R=I*alpha and you know alpha times r is acceleration of c.o.m.

Look very locally at point of contact, the point just above it tends to go to left, so you have to put friction to the right.
