I need a bad-weather coat

I live in NYC and need a good coat for when the weather is terrible. I have a nice wool Big Coat that I love, and a lightweight raincoat that I love, but I need something for when it's like 30 degrees outside and raining. I would probably wear something like this 5-10 days a year, so I'm not looking to spend a lot of money. I figured we're getting into clearance season for winterwear, so I should maybe buy something in the next month. I'd like something with a hood, weather-resistant, roomy so I can layer chunky sweaters underneath, and somewhere between thigh or knee-length-ish. (A lot of fashion-forward outwear seems to be kinda cropped or waist-length these days, which I'm not interested in.) I would also like something that doesn't feel too heavy. Currently, I'm leaning toward this Uniqlo option, which seems to check my boxes: https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E470079-000/00 (I'm kicking myself for not buying it when it was $70 last spring/summer) I'm also interested in this J.Crew option if it dips below $150 on sale (hasn't happened yet): https://www.jcrew.com/p/AD603 However, I'm also interested in more tech-y options that appear to be lighter but promise to be very warm. Taion is one brand I've seen recommended, and I think something like this might do the job? (I'm not sold on the quilted design, though) https://www.ssense.com/en-us/men/product/taion/black-military-pullover-down-jacket/16501041 What do you guys think? Are there any lightweight options I should be looking at? Are there lightweight coats that are actually warm enough for when it's ~30 degrees outside?

in my experience the lightweight uniqlo is not necessarily enough for those really cold days, i wear my lightweight down as a layer underneath a denim/moleskin jacket when it's a few degrees above freezing but i wouldn't think they'd be enough on their own in actual freezing weather. (I'm in Toronto, so same weather as you've got)

I had the impression that the seamless down coat was a "heavy" jacket from Uniqlo, right? (and which I would in all likeliness wear over a shetland or aran sweater on the really cold days)

You can do worse than a big parka Its a bit of a tradeoff between waterproofness, weight, warmth and cost in general Its been 15-20f here recently and wet, and a chunky wool sweater under a parka with a hood has been plenty

You might be right, I get confused with all the ultra light, seamless, lightweight language they use.

Why not get a nice looking coat that is weather resistant but that you'd also want to wear on days when it's not raining? You can get a weather resistant puffer and also wear it when it's not raining Probably a better idea than getting something really cheap exclusively for rainy days imo. I think the J. Crew one looks good and it goes on sale all the time. The Uniqlo and the Taion are both uggo.

Out of these options the taion one will be the warmest by far as its down filled

I don't think that's true The Uniqlo is also down filled. And although J. Crew is primaloft it looks much thicker than the Taion.

Taion down filling is really good, Uniqlo is decidedly less so, having owned stuff from both Primaloft stuff is fine but not great when it gets properly cold, has to be very bulky to make up for being less insulating (That particular Taion jacket will not be water resistant at all from reading the description, and wet down provides 0 insulation)

Fair enough I have no experience with Taion but it looks thin and cheap to me.

Probably the best bang for your buck in their price range

Wearing inner liners as outerwear is just not my thing I think lol

I just bought a liner jacket recently to use as an outerwear piece, we are not the same šŸ˜›

I do like it as a layering piece but yeah not my thing otherwise.

Lemaire liners when

The lemaire wadded liner is really cool actually But I think it works as outerwear because it doesn't have all the thin little quilting

I mean if Lemaire makes it I'll like it lol I do think the J. Crew parka is gonna be the warmest and best in cold rainy weather though. I've felt those things and they're very thick and waterproof.

Yooo, nice noragi /s Yeah a parka is the best option for what OP wants, and 30f really isnt cold enough to need anything warmer šŸ‘€

Oh man that's good to know. Do you know any other lightweight options that are appropriately warm and precipitation-proof? I'm not too fussy on what the material is as long as it works. Oh man I just realized that Taion piece is a pullover lol It does look great but I guess not really what I'm looking for anyway

If you like the styling, n3b type parkas are warm, and water resistant enough in general for most weather. I honestly think that J.Crew jacket is the best out of the options you found for your use case, if you like the styling. Should be able to get it or something similar for under 200

It looks heavier than the seamless down coat, no?

I wore one of those for years, they're warm as shit. Got me through like 5-6 years until I got too swole (fat) to wear it

Not that much so, but it has a wind/water resistant shell, unlike the seamless
