How does T3 Chat cost only 8 bucks a month?

Hi, I have seen Theos new Video about his Chat App, it really looks awesome and im strongly considering paying for the pro tier, but i still have a hard time understanding how the paid tier is only 8 bucks a month for Chatgpt 4o, while the original monthly subscription for the OpenAIs models are 20 bucks a month, before taxes. Is there a catch to it?

It's just because they're using the API, which leads to cheaper costs.. also consider that not everyone will use the service to it's max :)

Theo also said on stream that due to his being backed by the folks he’s backed by, he has a bunch of credit on azure. You could almost see this as a “money laundering” scheme, laundering azure credit for cash. If he is mostly deploying on Vercel, and has a ton of azure credit, this gives him a way to monitize azure credits

If you absolutely abused the service perfectly it would cost $38/mo Claude 3.5 Sonnet the most expensive model, 8192 output token limit, 200k input token limit. If you ran 500 queries a week it would cost them ~$38/mo It’s really not that expensive to run. No one will get anywhere close to that. ChatGPT and other subscriptions are paying for image generation, audio input and output, video generation, reasoning models, etc
